  1. HI,

I have a large (2.5G for 2 hours) .VCR file that was captured with an ATI All-In-Wonder with the following settings :

    Type: ATI VCR
    Video : 640*288, PAL (625) 4.02 Mbit/s
    Audio : 44.100 KHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

How or with what tool could I convert it in something more usable (VCD, MPeg, AVI or whetever else than this unconvenient .VCR format) ?

    Thanks in anticipation,

VCR, as I know, is a proprietary format of ATI MMC... I use MMC 7.1 and it has no VCR format, but I saw, this forum, that u should open the VCR files in MEDIA LIBRARY, at MMC traybar... then you will find a way to convert it into MPEG or AVI...

  4. You should set MMC for capturing in MPEG2 instead of ATI VCR.
There is no reason to capture in VCR format if you're going to export it later.

You can also search the forums for

As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  6. I was in the same situation a year ago.

Basicly: stop using ATI-software for capture. It delivers quiet bad results and it's not very good for VCD or SVCD.
I have ATI AIW 128 installed.

    Look at VCDhelp "capture".
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/mjpeg.htm

Use VirtualDub for capture and Huffyuv2.1. VD and huffyuv are freeware and these tools give you the maximum of tuning for capture.

Some rules are (for PAL-Europe. NTSC-values look at the VCDhelp site):
Capture in VirtualDub format 352*288 if you want to create VCD
Capture in VirtualDub format 480*576 if you want to create SVCD.

These capture-files are AVI and very large, so lots of disc-space is needed.

Convert these AVI files with TMPGenc (freeware, link in http://www.vcdhelp.com/mjpeg.htm) to MPEG1-VCD or MPEG2-SVCD (Trial periode in TMPGenc for MPEG2. AFter 30 days you have to buy the "pro" version, but this is certainly not expensive!!)

The MPEG-files you get with TMPGenc are good for burning a VCD or SVCD. I use Nero 5.5.

    Questions?
