Isn't one of them without software and not "upgradeable" or something?

Both have the same firmware. The difference is that one has a Pioneer logo stenciled onto the front, and the other does not. Literally, that's the ONLY difference. The 104 is what's known as an "OEM" drive, and is included in PC builds (such as Powermacs and Sony VAIO) and sold by computer-only shops. The A04 is a "retail package" intended for retail sale to the general public from anyone who sells A/V merchandise.

If you're reading this page and understanding what you read, there's no reason for you to spend extra to get an A04... you should be able to install and use a 104 seamlessly.

mpb is right. i got my 104 without any authoring programs. it did'nt even come a blank dvd-r! still, this way you can buy it cheaply and get your own software instead of paying extra for a bunch of crappy programs.

  4. What these guys are saying is true. But, if you want the programs that come with the A04, you can get a better deal by getting the a04 than by getting a 104 and buying the software separately.

For example: I wanted the 104 and DVDit! 2.5.2.

At esbuy.com, the 104 was $254 but I'd have to buy the software.
Also, at esbuy.com, the a04 was $340 with DVDit! 2.5.2

I couldn't find the software for less than $86 so it was a good deal for me.

p.s. I don't work for esbuy.com, they just had the best price i could find.

  5. I have found the 104 at 121cdr.co.uk for £219.00 plus the software and media are cheap.
