I'm still trying to get a DVD-RW to play on a set top player.

I've sucessfully burned a couple of DVD-R disc's that play in most players. I haven't been able to get a DVD-RW to play in anything but computer DVD drives though.

I first used a generic DVD-RW disc, but it woulden't play in ANY set top player. I even went into an electronics store and tried several of their players.

Today I received a Pioneer DVD-RW blank disc and burned to it.
Guess what? It wont play in anything but computer DVD drives.

The disc is Pioneer DVS-RW470SD ver. 1.1.

Wolud you guys please post what brands/version discs you're using, and wether they're sucessful or not?

Maybe this can save people time and money.

  2. Pioneer v1.1 DVD-RW discs work with my Sony DVP-C650D DVD changer.

I've heard that DVD-RW compatability is expected to be much less than DVD-R discs. However, some players may be able to read DVD-RW's with a firmware update.

  3. I too have used the same Pioneer discs but so far haven't come across a problem except in a friends Sony 7700 player. I have burned a number of DVD-RW tests and they played fine in my Pioneer 737 (hardly surprising really considering it's fairly new and is from Pioneer, the same company pushing the DVD-R/RW standard most vigorously).

I have also tested the -RW discs in the following players owned by friends (and a couple in a local electronics store (thanks Gary!!):

    Panasonic RV20
    Toshiba SD110
    Toshiba SD120
    Samsung 811
    Scan SC2000
    Sony 4355
    Sony 7355
    Pioneer 340
Yello (never wrote down the model number as it was the first of my friends machine's I tested it on).

Incidently all of these players handled DVD-R discs perfectly too. It's still a good idea to contact your manufacturer as in many cases a firmware upgrade will allow your player to read DVD-R/RW.

Some machines will also read DVD-R but not -RW, my friends Yamaha has this problem.

It is true that DVD-RW is supposedly less compatible with many DVD player models but once again, check with your manufacturer as there could well be a firmware upgrade that makes it compatible (Samsung recently issued an upgrade to one of their models that added DVD-R/RW compatibility).

For the record, I have used Pioneer DVD-RW ver 1.1 model number DVS-RW470SD discs.

Went to Best Buy with my Pioneer DVD-RW disc today and three of four DVD players played it (The Apex didn't).

The ones that did play it didn't play my other DVD-RW disc (a no name brand).

So I guess disc brand as well as DVD player both make a difference.

Anyway, I bought yet another player (Panasonic RV31U-K), now I can test b4 writing to DVD-R.

    I'm happy again.
