  1. I'm thinking of trying PowerVCR, primarily so I can edit the commercials from MPEG2 files, but I don't want to screw up my ATI install in any way. I know I can buy the MPEG2 plugins for other apps like TMPGEnc but if I'm going to shell out $$$ I thought maybe PowerVCR might be worth a try.

Also, does PowerVCR have to re-encode after an edit or is it a quick dump to a new file?

    Thanks for any advice,
    Jim

I'm capturing with an ATI TV Wonder Card and PowerVCR II. PowerVCR does not re-encode when you edit, but it DOES have some editing issues for some users.

I will say that my MPEG-2 captures with PowerVCR look much better than the ones I was doing with ATI MMC. The only problem I've run into with MMC after installing PowerVCR is right after I record something with PowerVCR MMC won't open until I restart. But once I started using PowerVCR I stopped using MMC at all, so that's not really a problem for me.

Here is a terrific link about what to consider when thinking about buying PowerVCR:

And here are some links detailing some of the problems some users have had with PowerVCR:

Also, before you buy, you might want to check ebay or some auction site like that. I bought my copy of PowerVCR II directly from the Cyberlink site and payed $50 - - but on Ebay users are selling the same versions for as low as $14.

Hope this was some help! Good luck in your search!

  3. Thanks, Jerzybo. I've been eyeing the ones on ebay already, just making sure about the program before I buy it (even if it is only $15).
