whilst capturing some holiday video, i have come across some footage that was filmed on it's side. is there any program that is capable of turning a capture right way up so to speak.

Sure, something like Virtual Dub will do that. Just capture the video to your hard drive and run it through VDub with the appropriate filters. There are many options, but that's just one.
