Ok guys, whether your final destination is VCD, XVCD, CVD or SVCD, and your source is DV, there is really nothing to even talk about - one program will end your quandries FOREVER!
ONE CAVEAT - if you want real-time, you better have a 2ghz system, or stop reading!
PowerDirector and the ability to batch capture clips using DV timecode and then transcode (overnight!) will give you the best quality captures, period. There is no disputing that frame-by-frame analysis that takes place during transcoding vs. real-time capture gets the most from your video, and the samples that I've made prove it.
I have a light workload (not interesting in capping tv shows) as I only shoot a few minutes a week, so it really takes no time at all, but the quality is exceptional. I'm creating 480 x 480 svcd at it looks great!
