I have bit the bullet and tried Graphedit on a REALLY stubborn ASF file.
I was not looking forward to it since some people on here have said
using Graphedit is not for the faint of heart - but it was GREAT , until
    I woke up this morning.

I had an error msg - Can't remember the specifics but it was something
like "Can't render filter..."? (Sorry, I am at work and do not have access
to my home PC to get the error).

Does anyone think using ASFTools BEFORE using Graphedit is a good thing.
It was not stated in kenetik's guide to use ASFTools to fix the file but I
am thinking that may be the way to go.

    Any suggestions?

P.S. This is an ASF file. I have heard that ASF and WMV are one in the same. Is this correct or do I have to encode the ASF to WMV?

    Thanks again.

Don't know about graph edit...but old versions of Virtual dub will go straight from asf to avi. Just open asf file, make sure direct stream copy is checked under both video and audio, click save avi.....takes 30 seconds max for 7 minute files....Guess you could do a full procees and have VirDub comprees in any codec you want at the same time....but this just makes a avi the same size and prop as the asf was.

Do a google search or get VirtDub1.3c at:

Sorry. I should have said that, along with this being a stubborn ASF file,
that I have tried all of the VirtualDub and TMPEGEnc and ASFTools ideas
posted here. I thought that Graphedit MAY get me out of this rut with this
ASF file but so far I am still stuck.

Can you open the asf file and view it without any hangs?...I have only had problems with files that were questionable from the start.
Also were did the file come from and how large is it?...

It seems that using asf tools prior to graphedit couldn't hurt any....and if all else fails...do you have a widows media authoring program...its what makes these asf files (waste of space in my opinion) to begin with. If so, I'd run it through that and make another asf file....hopefuly it would filter out what ever causes the problem durin its authoring process.

I can watch it without any problems. There are a couple of stuck frames
but they are nothing to mention. Everything stays in sync. I just want to
convert it so I can make a VCD.
I got it from WinMX, size is approx. 200meg (depending on what you are
using to see file sizes). Windows Media Player 6.4 says 197 meg.
I do have Windows Media Encoder but I thought I would give it a try
with the ASF first. If the WMV format would work I'll give it a try.
BTW: I did convert it once to WMV but could not do anything with it from
there (meaning I tried TMPGEnc with no luck but no other software trys).

    Thanks Again.
