I really are not one for asking questions in forums but this has me totally stumped !!!
i just tried to convert "using Nero" a mpeg to a burnt vcd. The software accepted the file fine and the burn seem to work fine ...
After closer inspection i found that on my standard windows properties only 2.3 mb showed up in folders on the cd, but in nero explorer it showed the folders and 63 minute duration + mb used and left ??? audio.
and you guessed it no play in dvd/vcd machine ... What i need to ask you all is this a normal or is there a session i need to close off
i have tried so much and am getting confuzed and wasting cds
what have i done wrong to get these cds like this ... i have had no errors ??? lolplease lend us a hand ..thankyou

It would be better to convert the AVI with TMPGEnc, then if there is a problem with the AVI you get to know about it early.
The same applies with download mpeg1 files, if there are any problems, Nero is not very good at handling them.
Problems range from Nero, sitting there forever more trying to load bad data, to Nero converting until it reaches a point in the input which it regards as the end of the file. Nero can also cause lip sync if the input has problem frames.
Most of these problems show up with TMPGEnc or Vdub -
like Kingjohn said use tmpgenc, but also burn on cdrw, once it is perfect then use cdr. I made a hell of a lot of coasters too when I first started making svcds. but then
duh
my dvd player plays cdrw so why keep wasting cdr

thank you so much guys !!! .... its all i wanted was something to try so i am off to give a whirl ..... one thing is i fall into the catagorie of cdr not cdwr very fristrating but i am hopefully fixing soon..... i will let you know how i go ...

I am having the exact same problem. I am starting with MPEG's that I have downloaded and want to put them onto a VCD to play in my DVD player. The problem is that I have used TMPGenc to do my conversions. First it gives me some crap with some of the MPEGs that I wanted to convert, but others go through as planned. I took those and went into Nero. I went through the wizard and chose VideoCD. I dragged all the converted files into the new burn's window and started the burn cycle. It took a while (and I have a pretty fast burner) and when it was done, I checked it in windows and it said only like 4MB were on the disk. I am also unable to play the VCD in my DVD player... other VCDs have worked, however. Not sure what is up. Any suggestions would be TERRIFIC!!

ok hi all again .... well more attempts i have tried and more coasters i have made.... i want to throw some more facts @ you to see what the hell could be causing this.... as surggested i ripped the files with tmpegec and thought cool this must be it my buddys are gunna love me ...but same thing happened win properties reads 2.3 meg while nero properties read 643 mb and audio... O next wierd thing is it plays in my pc under power DVD xp???? why i dont know .... out this has annoyed me so much i cycled around to buddys house and got a vcd that i know works... and decided to check out the simularitys..... the first thing i noticed was the mpgav folder on the working copy was large like 643 mb but on the one i have it is 737 897 kb???... also i must mention i am in australia ... now all i am left to think that nero is causeing this ...why this hurts my head so much is i know the information is burnt on the disc cause i can watch the movie on cd in a dvdrom using powerdvd xp in my pc hence... BUt put the burt disc into player dvd/vcd and it cant see it like win properties????? what the hell is going on!!!!???? all i can think of is a pal or ntsc problem ... to me it seems nero is not closing a sesion of or something!!! sorry the post is long but i need to give youall the facts cause believe me this is beyond me and i thought i was good lol
i really cant belive someone has not said ...oh your doing this wrong stupid (i wish)... but i got to pull this of
i am going to burn another one right now with a ntsc tempgec recode ...

Trid3nt i am near suicide contact me if you work it out bud this really sucks.... i also tried ntsc tmpegec rip to pal ,ntsc, svcd, and it all points to the same ...please help here guys or make some more awareness... what is another tried and trusted vcd burn method ????
there must be heaps more people with this problem
Trid3nt contact me dude on icq so we can go over a couple of things if you want ... i belive from as much as i have tried that it is a nero problem what i dont know maybe this latest version .. ...grrr iam so cranky:P -
Ok, lets start with some facts. The VCD must be fully compliant, if you add a mpeg to Nero that is not fully compliant it will let you know. Mostly audio bitrates are not right with downloaded mpegs, but it could be anything. If it does complain, then you need to fix the problem, dont let Nero do it...
Next is the VCD type you must chose in TMPGEnc, don't choose NTSC if you live in a PAL country (Australia is PAL) so keep to that just in case you make something the player can't handle or the TV wont display.
When you download a AVI, the first thing you would do is scan it for junk frames, and remove them if necessary. Vdub is good at this. At the same time you may get a warning that the AVI contains a variable bitrate for the audio, so you would then save out the audio uncompressed at 44.1Khz.
Finally when your happy the AVI is as best as it will ever be, you move on to convert it to Mpeg1, to do this you would load it into TMPGEnc then "load" a VCD template, in the case of Australia you would load a PAL VCD template called VideoCD (PAL).mcf once that is loaded there is nothing to set up, don't make any changes or the VCD will no longer be compliant.
So there is the AVI, however if you download a mpeg, it may or may not be fully compliant, it could also contain junk frames, bad audio. Since mpeg1 is more difficult to edit that AVI's you don't have much choice but to "Re-encode" it with TMPGEnc to a fully compliant VCD. Doing this will ensure that any non compliant elements are fixed, any junk frames are removed.
Finally when you end up with a fully compliant mpeg1, you are ready to move on to burn it to CD, however once converted to the correct spec, you now need to make sure its not to big to fit on one CD, if it is you have no choice but to edit out trailers, or if its double the size you need to split it in half, again TMPGEnc will handle this with split/merge.
Now that you have the Mpeg1 fully compliant at the correct size you are ready to drop it into Nero, there are a few things you can switch off in Nero, you don't need it to be CDI, that's not needed to play on a DVD player, you should check the box that says "Create standard compliant CD" and check the box for PAL (For PAL VCD Countries). When you ready to burn, you should also check the box that says "Finalize CD" you don't want to leave it open, as some Players like Music disks, wont play them.
That's about it, the disk Nero makes will contain 2 tracks, 1 track has the data on it, the other contains the mpeg stream, looking inside the folder that contains the mpeg will show the data file, this file will be a different size for each VCD you make, it depends on the original mpeg file.... -
Well, I tried everything that KingJohn told me to which matched up with most of what I had done before (the only things that were different were the ID1 thingy and other settings because I had used the wizard before). I also burned ONLY the compliant MPGs that I had made before. Somehow, even though I made them all with TMPGenc with the correct settings, it won't take some of them in Nero. Anyone have any ideas?
Oh and I am also wondering why a VCD that I had made previously does work with my DVD player, but the sync is off which might be because I used the PAL settings in TMPGenc, but the only reason I used PAL was because the tutorial on this page told me to because the FPS was 25... yet, I have heard that the sync will be off if I use PAL when I should have used NTSC... in the meantime, I'm running out of CDs! ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks KingJohn!-Trid3nt -
You said before that TMPGENc told you something.
it gives me some crap with some of the MPEGs
You need to post exactly what your doing, concentrate on one, the next mpeg could have a completely different problem, so stick to one at a time. -
Sorry about the lack of clarification with my earlier statement about Nero "giving me some crap". Better put, it said that several of the MPEGs and AVIs were unsupported (which was fine). Other MPEGs would be able to open in TMPGenc but were unable to encode due to the audio being 192. I created an uncompressed wav for said files in vDub and the problem is still unresolved. However, those files that were compliant, did end up working this morning, although I did nothing different than I had before -- including using ONLY compliant files (i had done that before as well). Not sure what caused everything to sort itself out, but it all works now (WHEW!). The only thing between the screw ups and the eventual solution was installing new ASPI drivers because VCDEasy (which still doesn't work) told me that I needed to upgrade them. That must have been it. Thanks for all the help! I'll let you know if I have any other troubles.

The trouble is people think that each move is converted the exactly the same way as before. Some of the AVI use a variable audio bit rate, so people just save it out in Vdub without converting it to 44.1khz uncompressed, if it is saved out without conversion or as the original audio, then nothing is achieved, TMPGEnc will still complain like it did before, Nothing has changed.
There may be corrupt frames in the AVI/Mpeg1, luckily the newest version of TMPGEnc handles these well. In addition to all these things, missing codec's or even locked codec's (Div3) will also prevent anyone editing or converting. One of the reasons I recommend Nimo, it fixes most of those problems.
Then finally there is the authoring programs, these very from very good to downright rubbish (Nero) To get the job done professionally all the good programs are needed.
I also get bad downloads, audio sync problems, bad frames, but they are usually fixed in a short time, before finally converting them with TMPGEnc -
Ok. The problem is back. Before when I said that the problem was gone, it was, but I was using a CDRW to test my VCDs on so that I make less coasters. I just burned a VCD to this CDRW and everything was great. Nero brought me back to the same CD that I had just burned and I burned the EXACT SAME THING to a blank CDR and no luck! What is with that?! I really appreciate the help by the way! Thanks.

AHAH! I have figured it all out. May I suggest to ish! that he check out the DVD Player Compatability List. I looked on there for mine and aparently my DVD player is picky on the brand of CDR that it will take (seems like the light blue bottoms). I know it sounds stupid, but it is probably the reason why some of them are working and some are not... at least for me. Good luck!!
-Trid3nt -
CD-R brands are important, I would have thought that was the first thing to check. It would have been a lot quicker if you had said you were using CDR-W in the beginning, they are completely different to CDR.
AND once you have one brand that works, dont change them
