  2. Probably not, dual layer 9.4Gb recording technology does not exist, not even in professional circles.

A dual layer disc is made by authoring two seperate images onto either DLT tape or onto two DVD-R Authoring discs. The first image contains the first layer, with the second image containing the second layer. The production house creates two seperate semi transparent plastic discs which are glued together to form the dual layer disc. This is then bonded to a reflective layer and finally the whole lot is coated in much the same plastic as CDs to create the final dual layer disc.

You can buy double sided DVD-R discs with 4.7Gb on each side but dual layer recording technology is probably years away. Even then, by the time it is perfected BluRay will be upon us, so dual layer recording will probably be redundant anyway. For those that haven't heard of it, BluRay is a high density recordable DVD format being developed by Sony and it's partners. It's completely incompatible with current DVD players but BluRay players will be able to play existing discs if BluRay gets the nod from the DVD Forum, as looks likely. However, Sony and others have only shown prototype recorders so far and admit a proper consumer recorder is still a few years away from becoming reality and being affordable.

    alkieman,

    If ripping a dual-layer dvd movie into 2 DVD-R,
what happen at the end of first layer?
Will it just stop abruptly or the burning software
provide a peaceful chapter end or something like that.

    Thanks.
