  1. Have a Toshiba 16x DVD ROM...Smartripper indicates im ripping at 2.0x. Is that good or bad?

  2. you should do better than this. If you are running Windows 98, enable the DMA option under settings/control panel/system/cdrom. This will speed things up. :P

  11. Hi ! just thought I'd add this ........

The DMA tip is a good one, so stick with your DMA settings.
I've got a Samsung x16 DVD-ROM running on Win98 (DMA selected) and initially got around x2.0 Movie ripping speed.

However, after doing a complete system reinstall I'm now pushing x7 !!!

Granted, this maybe a last resort for you as it will take a few hours to reconfig your system.
But I guess that doing a reinstall allowed my IDE buss drivers to config themselves to the optimum for my drives.

    Just a thought anyhow .......

  12. Hi guys,

Not sure I can offer any help here - just my observations. I have a region free DVD-ROM that runs at 12x, but I find that rip speeds vary greatly. nder 98, I would get anywhere from 1.9x to 7x - this depended on how "clean" the installation was. Now, under XP (having usd Forceaspi to install Aspi v4.60), it varies less - from 3x to around 5x - never any higher.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is some value in exploring what other processes are running and closing anything that is absolutely non-essential??

  14. is there a way to switch to DMA mode on your DVD drive when running XP Pro? I remember being able to change that back in windows ME and earlier, but i can't find it in XP? any idea where i can change that option? (i'm getting pretty slow rip speeds as well)
    Thanks
    Mojo
