I am at my wit's end, trying to get my PC to play VCDs. I have an HP Pavilion 8580C with an HP CD-Writer Plus Drive. I am running Windows 98. I have the latest version of Windows Media Player, but when I try to open the MPEGAV folder to view the .dat files, I receive the following error message: "Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported."
I checked the properties of the .dat file and read-only is checked. Does that mean my drive is having trouble recognizing the files in the first place?
I also checked the FAQ which mentions something about checking for a virtual device driver SCSI1HLP.VXD. I checked my files and I only have something like thiscsi1hlp.oldvx_. Could this be the problem and how do I solve this?
I did try downloading a version of WinDVD and the VCD played fine with that application. This seems to imply that the VCD is ok.
Suggestions anyone? I just want to watch my show...

Hi!
If you really need to watch vcd movies in ms media player just copy the .dat files to your computer harddrive and rename it to .mpg
it's just easy.

I tried copying the files and changing the extensions already and got the following error message: "Cannot copy AVSEQ01: Cannot read from the source file to disk."
