Anybod here ever try 1 pass vbr with dvd2svcd? Well I never did until recently but I got a great suprise when I did. I tought it was a bug but the dvd2svcd author told me it was intentional!
Heres the problem:
Now in one pass vbr mode using cce you get to set the q factor ( I choose 7)thats all. Now one would think that cce would encode at
min: 500
Max: 2400
Q: 7
However dvd2svcd does something very unusual indeed! It sets what would have been the avg bitrate in x-pass mode to the max bitrate!! So you end up with somthing like this!
Min: 500
Max: 1600(!)
q: 7
Now can somebody plz tell me whats the sense in that?? I mailed the dvd2svcd author complaining and he sent me this back:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!That is the only way to control the final CD sizes just a little.![]()
![]()
![]()
![]()
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Think about it. If I do a one pass vbr using CCE and q @ 7 then it will create its own little avg bitrate of around 1.6mbps. This is brill and gets most films on 2 or 3 cds. Now If a faswt scene comes up of a car or something it can temporally up the bitrate to say 2.1mbps to compat the action. Now since my max is near my avg anyway when I use dvd2svcd if a fast scene comes up I get caca as my max is 1600. The same as my avg!! If I wanted to do this then I would just use cbr!!!!
Come' on dvd2svcd author. I aint trying to pick a fight. simply showing you an eror.
A dvd2svcd lovin'

It's nearly impossible to calculate. If dvd2svcd did let it flucate so much like that then it wouldn't know where to cut your cd images and wouldn't follow your bitrate parameters. It's not an error but more of a necessary thing other's people would report that it gave you 3 cds instead of 2, etc.
Best thing to do is CBR (I don't do only if it's a 30min flick)...and when I used to have a slow computer P450Mhz I did CCE 3 pass which looked almost as good as 4 pass. Also you can use simpleresize instead of bicubic although bicubic gives better results IMHO but increases your encoding time by 20%. -
with one pass it is virtually impossible to get the bitrate right to get the desired CD size. so it is a struggle. I would suggest staying away from 1pass and do no less then 3.

I find it hard to believe no body is supporting me! I mean it dosn't make sense to set the max bitrate as the avg!!! The results will be worse/ the same as cbr! Does anybody know how to fix this in dvd2svcd? I really like the program, but this is of course a problem. The quailty is crap in one pass! It really should look good and get almost any film with a decent mix of high/low motion on 3cds!

DVD2SVCD is wonderful.
if you take CCE standalone and encode a movie one pass the quality turns out just as crappy. I would suggest forgetting that one pass crap anyways and move on to where CCE's power really comes into play, more then 2 passes, which is something I don't think TMPG can do. -
Baker,
I am not sure if you will like this idea, but when I want DVD2SVCD to do something non-standard, I stop it after the ripping stage, and then edit the script, I think this is the .a2v file, and fix the parameters I want. Then I select recover, and let it go. Hope this helps.
PS - You still haven't told me where to get a cheap copy of CCE.

I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE NOBODY UNDERSTANDS AND ID COMPLAINING ABOUT WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.
I have found away around the problem anyhow in case somebody with brains in the future finds ths topic intresting.
Set the min avg bitrate at 2400. This means the max will be at 2400.
But there is another problem.
BBmpeg crashs when it comes to complete the file. It trys to join them but when it comes to start joing file 2 it crasges!! Anybody had the same problem?
I would search doom9 but my computer can't acces his fouroum will somebody do it for me?

Baker,
I understand exactly what you are saying, and gave you a way to accomplish what you wanted to do without making the min bitrate your max. Maybe that created a funky file. At what point does bbMPEG crash? Is it during the muxing and splitting part? I can look up your problem, but you must be more specific. BTW, I stop the batch and finish up by encoding with Kwag's templates, but you said you gave up on them.
TomG. - aka Plant_Guy -
All Right I fixed my original problem by setting the min avg bitrate in CCE to 2400. That means when it came to enocode dvd2svcd sets the max at 2400!!
Anyways heres my new problem:
Dvd2svcd is now working great as I said,
But now bbmpeg is the problem. While muxing the files I set the max cd size at 750. when it comes to 750mbs the program (bbmpeg) crashses.
And when I check the file it makes before crashing (the 750mb one I may add) There is no audio!!! I think this may be an audio problem as no other programs can mux them either even do winamp can play the audio and bsplay can play the video. Its just muxing them thats the problem.
Thnaks plant,

What happens when you do a simple mux in TMPGEnc? Does is crash? Does it give you an error message? Maybe muxing fails b/c the audio and video components are mismatched, ie more video or more audio, so at the end, the mux. operation will fail. If you use the default parameters, does everything work? Why not try my approach and edit the script to the right parameters, and see if that works.

Maybe that's a red flag (TMPGEnc not being able to open the audio). There have been times when I forgot to set the downsampling flag, and TMPGEnc has not complained, so it should open the audio file, no problem. At this point, you have some options, as I see it. If the audio is in question, you can rip it again from the .VOB files that should still be on your drive, or you can try to manually rip audio and video from the .VOB files yourself setting up CCE manually and seeing what happens. Another option is trying another movie to see if you get the same results. Last, but not least, you can select from the recovery options and do it all over again (except the DVD ripping part).

Last, but not least, you can select from the recovery options and do it all over again (except the DVD ripping part)(i have tried many times,no success).

OK,
So much for those suggestions. How about creating an AviSynth script? If you select the .VOB files, it will process the audio. Can you use the resulting script file and audio file like you do in TMPGEnc? If that works, then use that method. I do not have a copy of CCE, so I cannot reproduce your problem to see what is happening, so I can only suggest things I would try given an incomplete picture. BTW, you did not say anything about playing with the DVD2SVCD script file. Also, bbMPEG has given me problems before, maybe you can try a different version to see if the problem goes away. OK, that's all for now.
TomG. - aka Plant_Guy -
I am now redoing it. You see I want to create a dvd2svcd method like my vcd method. something that is simple 1-2-3. Of course I can do something thats really complex, but I like consisticy. This is why I want to set up a q vbr method that should fit most films on 2-3 cds. So the I tried setting bbmpeg to create a mpeg file insted of a svcd file and it didn't crash but the audio was missing.
Thanks,
Baker -
Baker,
I understand. I too want a consistent method that works without tweaking everthing for each and every disc I want to copy. We are on the bleeding edge using free (mostly) tools, so I guess we have to put up with the quirks they have.
