I just downloaded what I think is the os x.1 update. Should I update to os x? I currently am running os 9.2.2. Also the file is a .dmg and is about 16mb. Is that the whole file?

Still using OS9. I feel for you. :P
Seriously, OS9 sucks. Get used to OSX cuz that's the future of Apple. Any app you could ask for is out now in OSX. No crashes, beautiful interface, and unix. Doesnt get any better.
16MB? Dont recall, but you can always get a free 10.1 upgrade CD (if in stock) at any store that sells mac software/hardware. -
OS9 doesn't suck, it's a very good desktop operating system -- circa 1992. But OSX is a thing of beauty -- like having your own mainframe on your desk. :D. Best damn operating system I've ever used. The classic interface isn't perfect -- it's slow and it eats up a chunk of memory, and its just as prone to extension conflicts as straight OS9 -- but it does work, so you can still use your old aps.
Bottom line: The upgrade is a no brainer. -
Is vcd/svcd creation as easy as it is in os 9? I've got the process down for 9 and have written several guides. Is the process similar or is it a no-brainer process?

I came back from the last NY Macworld with the full knowledge that OS 9 is a thing of the past and no developer had any future plans for writing for it and I had no choice but install and update to OS X.
At that time I had already used the public beta and had a few issues, but since making the commitment and having the subsequent updates, I have been very happy, Actually very rarely if ever boot into 9.2.2
It is a very clean OS and it is a pleasure working with. All I'm waiting for is a native version of QuarkXpress, and I'll be totally OS X without running in classic mode.
Cheers- -
Just dual boot if you're wondering. Now I don't know if the OS X.1 update will work. Backup before you try it.
I rarely use OS 9, because IMO it is crap. Mind you I don't do SVCD/VCD at all so software availability may be in an issue.
Steve Jobs yesterday announced that OS 9 is dead, by the way. -
I don't think Chinito has ever used a mac before. OS 9 is fantastic and there are still many programs that are not available for OS 10. Any Macintosh sold today comes with both OS's installed. OS 10 still lacks good java support and actually the latest release of java from apple is terrible compared to the previous one. It's no problem to run OS 9 programs in OS 10 either. Also, OS 10 is much larger then 16mb, that sounds like a small patch. So, don't "upgrade" yet. Keep using them both. Apple is not even ready to tell people to totally switch yet.

Bad assumption there guy. Been using Mac's since the early 80's. Like every other OS, you need to know when it's time to move on. I've done tons with OS 9 and everything can be done better in 10.1. I don't know what apps you're still clinging to but does an OSX version of it exist?
Java under OSX will improve but its not a big deal. I really hope you are a OSX users and saying this as suppose to someone who doesnt have OSX and is just making assumptions. I don't know of anyone who converted to OSX and wants to go back to 9. I'm sure you feel comfortable in 9 (like we all do) but give OSX more time and you'll see why it's better. -
I used OS X before I used os 9 and hated it. I have the Os X 10.0 disk, but everything requires 10.1, which I don't have. Maybe I'll stick to os 9 for just a litle while longer.
-
I admit (and so does every OSX user) that 10.0 was buggy as hell. There is a big difference in 10.1 and higher. 10.0 is no way to judge OSX.
The 10.1 cd is free, just ask for it or you can get from apple's site(paying S+H will cost you). If you are not ready for X then stick to 9 but sooner or later you will have no choice. Glad to help when you decide to upgrade. -
My $.02
I used PCs in my home since 1999 when I finally broke down and bought a computer. I bought the Windows box because it was cheaper, but not better.
Throughout school I only used Macs, and I always intended to buy one. I went out to get an iMac but waited because I couldn't get help in a store (Circuit City you might know). I went to a local Kinko's and they had one Mac booted into OS X. The minute I saw the interface I was hooked! I managed to tear myself away from Kinko's, went back to Circuit City, grabbed a sales guy and told him to ring up an new iMac immediately, and I haven't looked back.
Of course, I still use Windows at work. Let's just say when I go home, I am glad I'm not assaulted the whole day with virus warnings, threats, and attacks.
A Macintosh is love. -

well when i first tried to use osx i hated it, and that was the 10.1 version. i hate the dock, it's an eyesore. and alot of the apps i used had yet to be released. i'm a longtime mac user and although 9 has its issues i find that it is a very friendly os. my main problem with this whole osx thing is that as consumers we are basically being forced into upgrading to it or be left behind. i love my mac, but i don't love the new os or having to fork out a ton of cash so i can run the new apps that are native to it. apple and it's application designers (adobe mainly) are using this new os as a means to cash in. as a consumer i don't appreciate it and feel tread upon. in my career it is expensive to keep up on software and equipment updates anyway and having to buy all new software so i can run osx completely is a costly venture. eventually i will make the switch completely, but only when i see a few more upgrades and absolutely have to.

Wake up dude and upgrade to Win XP............its only a matter of time before the MAC is a relic of the past, do it MAN, you know you want to, sieze the moment!!, open a window, pick up the MAC and throw it out the window.
Now drive down to the local PC store, yeah treat yourself(youve been punishing yourself for years.....shitty software.....lack of software....incompatability.....allways a step behind the rest...not to mention expensive)

Why would I want to waste my money to support the Microsoft empire? I'd never throw my money away on a PC!

LOL! What a moron! Trade XP for OSX? Mac's lead the way as always and hardcore PC users just hate that. When they decide to leave DOS behind them and jump onto Unix they'll see why OSX is CLEARLY the better choice.
I agree with ya Weirdwolf and Monzo, too many crap software out there for the PC. It's not about quantity but quality. -

I'm still back at OS X v.10.1.3 (10.1.4 had some screwy thing in it that made Java-based chatrooms scroll backwards). Overall, switching to OS X was the best money I ever spent on a computer. I left PCs for personal use behind when I bought this iMac, and I haven't looked back!

One thing I hate about my Mac (iBook) is that you can't run iDVD 2 on it.WTF? I pay for Apple hardware and I can't run Apple software? No, I don't want to buy a SuperDrive Mac, because I already own a DVD-R burner. I can make DVDs with other software though.

DVD Studio Pro runs on the G3 platform, and in version 1.2 for OS 9, you can author the DVD from within DVDSP to an external drive. This functionality is missing in version 1.5 for OS X on the G3 platform.

One guy claims his DVD-RAM is supported with iDVD 2.) -

This has been my experience; the option to do so is greyed-out.
I just plugged in my Firewire DVD-RAM/-R drive into a DVD SP 1.5 endowed G3 machine. No other DVD burners were plugged into it. The "Build and Format Disc" option was not greyed out, and clicking on it brings up a menu which includes my drive as the sole option.
EDIT:
By the way, what do use for authoring? iMovie etc.? -
Please! do not try to say that any Mac OS will ever be better than Windows. I agree that Unix is a great OS, but Apple did NOT develop it. They just made OS X based on the Unix kernel, which doesnt really make it there OS, more of a branch of Unix, and its still not better than Windows.
And, if everyone started using Mac OS then it would also be bombarded with virus threats and security risks, but because NO ONE (or just people who arent smart enough to realise that windows is better) uses Mac OS's the constant virus and security threat is not there.
Please understand, Windows is a way better OS than any Mac OS will EVER be!
WINDOWS! WINDOWS! WINDOWS! WINDOWS! WINDOWS! -
