I have found that if I am downloading an mpeg file from Kazaa I can open it before it has finished downloading to check that I am getting what I want, and to view the quality. This does not work with divx files though. Can anyone explain why this is the case.

Yes it does !, but they could be segmented if your downloading from different sources, also Vdub struggles with some missing key frames.
1, copy the *.dat to another folder and rename to AVI (for AVI files) or mpg for Mpeg files.
2, load TMPGEnc, load the part file, select preview
TMPGEnc can handle the partially downloaded files better than Vdub -
You can just even open it with Media player if you rename it...
