I've been pouring over the guides and forum posts, and I just can't get any kind of surround out of my system.
I own an RCA Dolby Digital/Pro Logic unit and it works great with DVD movies.
I've tried almost everything to get the two back speakers to work on the VCD's I make, just the front two left and right work.
What am I doing wrong? Demux? Demux all tracks? Dolby Surround Downmix? On or Off? Even Sefy's guide doesn't mention if it should be on or off.
Thanks for your time!

miketwo,
have you tried, just as an experiment, to capture from the DVD player
while it's playing? ?
No, not from the DVD-ROM, but rather, from your DVD player!!
Then, encode as usual, and see if that does anything.

Interesting, but what would that do, I have found some VCD's (not by me) that have the two back speakers working...I'm pretty sure my settings are not right (either DVD2AVI or in TMPEG) that is causing it to lose the surround sound.

hmmm, shesh!
anyways, I was hoping that if it worked, then you know its something to
do w/ dvd2avi setting or two, else, if it didn't work, then it's tmpg's
setting that have to be looked into, or a combo of both. That's what
was the "interesting" was all about here.
oh welp, later.

Later!
Thanks for the idea, but I already know that my RCA system can decode it properly and I have surround sound, now if someone could tell me the proper settings for the two software's (Sefy, u there?).

VCDs are stereo. they dont support 5.1 or DTS or anything. Some receivers support simulated surround that puts it through all the speakers!

If you are running Win98SE make sure your have Directx8.1 installed and not the default vers 6.1.
I only do captures and found that after I did a re-install of Windows I lost my surround sound. It took me a couple of days to realise that Directx was back to 6.1. After upgrading the problem disappeared.
I don't know if this applies for ripping, but it is another thing to check out.
All the best,

@ Ronin2: that doesn't apply to ripping (and should apply to capturing either... but anyway)
If you are ripping a DVD and the original audio track is DD5.1 (i.e., Dolby Digital 5.1), then Dolby Surround Downmix option should be ON.
If the original audio track is DD2.0 (i.e., Dolby Digital but only stereo tracks with/without Dolby Surround encoded audio) then the Dolby Surround Downmix option should be OFF.
When encoding the audio, make sure that it isn't on joint stereo.

Thanks everyone for the tips, I think the problem was I kept ripping the DTS track instead of the Dolby Digital track or something like that...I'll report back soon!

baker, update your guide (i'm doing the same to mine) as there are alot of new programs out there, and the guides don't match the interfaces anymore, like DVDx v2.0 for example is completly different.
As for the VCD, as Vitualis mentioned, no need for me to elaborate on it.Email me for faster replies!
