  1. I am researching buying 20 to 50 portable DVD players for use in my company. I would prefer to find a model that does NOT have a screen, because I will be using them with LCD projectors or TVs; they need to be portable because they will have to stand up to travel. A screen would be fine as long as they cost $400 or less.

The problem is that I will be burning DVD-Rs (general use media) on an Apple SuperDrive and I am having a lot of difficulty finding a portable player in my budget that will play this media. Apple has a list of compatible players, but it does not seem to list any of the portable players. Also, the player should have an s-video output if possible, as well as a/v output.

Any suggestions for this problem much appreciated!

(note: The panasonic DVD PV40 has been ruled out- Panasonic confirmed that it will not play the media).

Apple brand DVD-R manufactured in Japan play flawless on the RCA portable DVD player model number RC5440P (read my comments, listed under Anthony S Jennings).

It has S-Video out and in, and composite video out and in. This player gets really hot, and the little rubber feet underneath it slide around and spreads its gummy glue. The battery lasts about three hours, but I noticed after 2 hours 30 minutes of continuous play, it refuses to transition to the other layer on a dual-layered DVD. This has never been a problem with Apple branded DVD-R, as they aren't dual-layered. This player does not play DVD-RW.

You may be able to get these players for US$450 each (mine cost $499 at amazon.com) but they sell out online everywhere they're being sold at this price-point.

This player also plays properly authored VCD, SVCD, XVCD and XSVCD. Some of the SVCDs I authored under dodgy versions of Nero do not play at all.

  3. The Apex Pd-50 would be great for you. It has wonderful off screen playback with the rca jacks right on the side. The only bad thing is the screen isnt the best but since its only 199 and you dont need the screen then it would be perfect for you.

They are only availble currently at CircuitCity.

  4. jorie,

I would look and test one of the Pioneer portables w/o the screens. Pioneer DVD player have a great rep for playing home made media. (DVD-R, VCD, SVCD)

If you are going to buy 20+ units, I would push for a big volume discount!
