Did some caps with my ADS Instant DVD and found that the file at 480*480 224Kb/s stereo is too big to fit an 80 min. CDR. What program do I use to convert it to something that will fit?

cap is (according to VCDeasy): 891.17 MB 2660 Mb/s

What is the maxiumum that will fit an 80 min. CDR anyway? I tried to use VCDeasy to make a cue/bin file but it says it is still too big to fit a CDR.

    TIA

80 mins of video will only fit on an 80 min cdr if you encoded at 1150kbits per sec, the vcd standard bitrate. Since you are encoding at 480x480 I assume you are making a svcd?

Anyways the total capacity of an 80 min cdr when burnt in mode 2 (what vcds and svcds use) is rougly 800MB. Use TMPGenc to encode and use a bitrate calculator to determine what bitrate to use. Both can be found in the tools section.

I tried to use TMPGenc to rerender from 2660KB/s to 2148Kb/s and 192 Kb/s stereo audio and it says something to the effect that it doesn't want the Mpeg but it will accept an AVI. Since the source is Mpeg-2 I tried to use Video Studio 6 which came with the IDVD but the rerender looks like a poor VCD (though it fits an 80 min. CDR perfectly and Nero burns it happily). My next test will be to try to recapture at the lower bitrate setting and see what happens. So far, I've burned over 20 disks trying to get stuff to fit in SVCD spec onto an 80 min. CDR and in sync. How are people able to cap the same show as I and then put it onto a CDR?? bbMpeg says that the higher rate that the IDVD uses MUST be put onto 2 CDRs. I don't want to split the show if I can help it. The show is 45 minutes long with no commercials (gotta love Showtime).

If you know how to get TMPGenc to convert the file to the lower bitrate, please let me know. The instructions from this and other sites assume you are converting from AVI (or one of it's many variants) to Mpeg-2.

  5. Use DVD2AVI to be able to open the file in TMPGenc. In the future, use the Stream Machine software on the ADS installation disk to make SVCd's, as you can set the bitrate with it at least. Good luck cutting the ADS SVCD file and keeping sync. The ADS Instant DVD is not a product that has many of the bugs worked out as of yet. I sold mine after 6 months of promises from ADS that they would have some fixes that would make the unit work as it should. If you just bought the unit and can still return it, I would return it and buy something else.
