Any tips for higher quality from TMPGEnc?

Hi all,

I have been using TMPGEnc to make some really nice VCDs, and I want to know if anyone has any tips for squeezing out better quality from it. I currently use Rippack to make a very high quality DivX file, then I use TMPGEnc to encode this to MPEG1.

There are alot of things that can make better quality:
!!NB! Remember: Better quality = Longer encoding time !!

1. In settings, set "Motion search precision" to Highest Quality
2. Set the bitrate higher. It would then be a X(S)VCD.
3. Use 2-pass VBR
And the list goes on...........

You can also experiment with the KVCD Templates

How can I make the bitrate higher? I use the wizard that TMPGEnc brings up to create an MPEG-1 VCD, but when I look for botrate settings under "Advanced Options", it is all greyed out. How can I access these?

I don't think there is any way to change bitrate in the wizard.

Try using the TMPGEnc without wizard.

Remember you have to load the Unlock.mcf in the Extra folder to be able to change the settings.

WTF?!?!?!
one tip i can give you right away, encode straight from the DVD to mpeg-1, don't encode to Divx then to mpeg-1, that's just plain stupid!!

As flaninacupboard said it would definitely be best to encode straight to mpeg1 if you have the source material on a DVD.
