DVD2AVI - why does it create a .mpg ?

Good morning

I used DVD2AVI for the first time yesterday, but to my dismay,
the program outputs a file that TMPGenc then converts to a .avi file.

I'm lost here, why didn't it create a real .avi file for me ?
