  1. I've downloaded a letter box movie...

I converted it to mpeg using 352 x 240, but it shows on the whole screen(stretched out)

How do you keep the file in letter box form on your tv?

  2. You didn't post any info on your how you authored the file, but I am going to assume you used Tmpgenc (as it is probably the most popular). Anyway, the problem is that the original file is encoded with a 16:9 aspect ratio (the letterbox aspect dimensions). When you reencoded the movie, you encoded it as a 4:3 (which is all that VCD can support).

If you do not specify to tmpgenc that the input file is a 16:9 (Settings -> Advanced -> Source Aspect Ratio), it may assume it is a 4:3 and stretch the input movie to fill those dimensions.

When you do this, tmpgenc will resize the movie correctly adding black bars at the top and bottom. Please note, you can change the size of the zoom by choosing different settings (Settings -> Advanced -> Video Arrange Method), try a few and see which you like. Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio) will give you all of the video, the others will center in different ways.

Remember, for a VCD it is always best to select all your settings and then goto File -> Preview to see how the output will look. Hope that helps.

  3. Just realized I may have answered your question wrong. If you downloaded the movie it may be an avi (divx or similar). If so, set your aspect ratio to 1:1 and still choose the Video Arrange Methods as Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio). Either of these posts should fix your problem.
