Yup I ain't lying and I aint using any funny resouloution or anything.

I use full resouloution of 720x576 and still maintain high quailty at up to four movies per dvd-r!

This is great as dvd-r are still a bit more expensive then cd-r and at 3 movies per dvd-r its quite cost effective.!!!!

    Credits go to:

You can easily burn 5-6 movies per DVD-R, if you use 352 X 288 resolution, interlace mpeg 2 and bitrate about 1300kb/s. The quality is VHS. Not bad. Even to a 36'' looks pretty good.
Or you can easily burn 2-3 movies per DVD-R, if you use 352 X 576 resolution, interlace mpeg2 and a bitrate about 2400. The quality is SVHS. Better. Only on HDTV you gonna see a difference from a DVD
Both those formats are compatible with most DVD standalones out there. The only concerne is to keep the gop stacture lenght at 18 Pal/15 NTSC. Ain't difficult with TMPGenc 2.54 plus

The DVD standalones with problems, are some sony ones, half of the very very first DVD players (produced between 1997-1999) and all the "DVD combatible" machines, like those X-boxes, PS2, etc. Even there are solutions, but who cares? Only some pirates, who wants to sell movies to kids.
This is the correct time to say that I dislike people getting PS2,X-box, etc to play DVDs! It is stupid. OK, if you are a Kid, then there is a logic in this. But if you are 25+ , come on...
Or is it that most 30+ with kids simply don't know how to tell to there wifes that they want to buy a DVD standalone, so they buy a PS2/X-box for "the kid to play"? ***Gosh!*****
    I can't understand that logic.
Go buy chip made in china standalones. They cost 150-200 Euro and do anything: Macrovision free, Region free, flexible with all those X discs out there.
    Am I wrong?

You have got to be kidding! There is NO WAY that you can cram 3 movies (let alone 4) onto a DVD and still maintain anything resembling "quality" (unless these so-called "movies" are 30 minutes each - or, your idea of "quality" is VCD resolution) especially at full D1 resolution.

Let's do some simple math... There are 37.6 billion bits on a DVD-R. Let's say that your 4 movies are 90 minutes each (6 hours). That means that there are 21,600 seconds of video that needs to be encoded. Divide the 37.6x10^9 by 21,600 and you will get 1,740,741 bits available per second of video (or 1.74Mbps). Dang, when I encode, my minimum bitrate is 2Mbps, but my average is usually 4.5-5Mbps. So the math betrays you. There "ain't" no quality in these encodes.

As you said, DVD-Rs are expensive. For you, you should just stick with CDRs.

... I'm wasting my time with you... For everybody else, DON'T DO THIS!!! You'll be sorry in the end.

  6. Baker,

so you got a guide coming out to pull this off? I have managed 2 DVD movies at 720x480 ( Training Day and Glory ) and they look really good, took me a while to get my bitrate to an acceptable level but I am very pleased with the results, but considering how well thw KWAG template works for vcds it does figure that sooner or later someone figured out how to pull the same sort of tweaking for DVD-R. So congrats and I await the guide.
