i keep on reading that DMA should be enabled on hard drive but how do i do this?
i run XP?

1st, have a look in your bios, there's a parametre to enable DMA.
after that, well, have a look in the configuration pannel (i don't know XP, and i don't want to, but there must be a configuration pannel somewhere) and find the hard(s) disk(s).
there should be an option nearby.Rico. -
If your drive supports DMA then XP should already already have this option turned on. But if you want to check then goto control panel > system > Hardware > Device Manager. Look for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and look at the properties of the primary and secondary controllers. Under advanced you will see the 'Current Transfer Mode'.
WARNING: Changing these settings can possibly !@#$ up your PC. So if your not sure what you're doing; don't do it.
