So far I have many times encoded and burned DVD-based SVCD's (DVDx, Nero), and played them brilliantly on my Philips DVD711.

Now I have captured a TV programme (PCTV), edited it (VirtualDub. mux & de-mux), encoded it as SVCD (TMPGEnc) and burned it (Nero). The resulting disk plays fine on WinDVD, however it staggers when playing on the standalone DVD711. Approx. every 20 - 25 secs the video signal has overtaken the audio signal, and the player halts for about 5 secs in order to 're-sync'. Following that, the video stream repeats som frames and the audio pitch is notably higher for 1-2 secs.

What should I do to overcome this problem?

Thanks a lot for any help you can give.

Well, SVCD playback problems with Philips DVD players is nothing new. Have you tried playing your disc on any other player?

You should try to upgrade your players firmware to overcome (most) of the SVCD playback problems (for example SVCD REW/FF). Take a look on the DVD player compatibility list, I have posted info about FW upgrade there for DVD622, probably applies for you too.

Thanks to your remark I was re-directed to check the compatibility info on my DVD711 standalone player. There I found the solution, given by Xarquinn on 27.05.2002.

He wrote (...) In TMPGEnc, under settings for video, rate control, use Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR). This is important because if Constant bit rate is used instead of variable bitrate, then the picture would pause every few seconds or minutes for a second. (...)

I just completed a test, and it works! Thanks to everyone.
