Hi VCD helpers! I hope someone can help me. I'm just learning to capture/edit video using Pinnacle system's PCTV pro,it's older VFW Version4.02a drivers,(After seeing warnings about the newer V5.x WDM drivers I've got with it),& Virtual Dub for capturing.
Although reasonably happy with some of my first results, I'm not entirely happy with the subsequent Mpeg1/VCD conversion's of certain things.
In particular,an anime cartoon (Cardcaptors for the curious),is proving a real pain.
I've been capturing in an uncompressed 640x480 AVI, from my VCR, (Just a few minutes of test footage due to size restrictions). After frameserving in VDub,I opened & converted the AVI using the TMPGenc VCD/Mpeg1 wizard,to 352x288 4:3 PAL (704x576). Despite selecting the "highest Quality" rendering, the subsequent Mpeg/VCD conversion file features occasional horizontal "bars". This seems to especially happen when the screen animation is "busy".
They're not visible in the original AVI footage, only in the Mpeg1. The bars aren't constant either-some footage is clear & normal. Should I be capturing as a straight 352x288 AVI file to convert it?
2)Do I need to use any VDub filters before I start capturing? What filters do people suggest for anime/cartoon's?
3) Do I need to set a "bit rate" if I'm using an uncompressed RGB capture?
What about the Pinnacle Microvision codecs,if I use them, can I still convert it to mpeg1?
Ironically, a test with robotech proved quite a good AVI to Mpeg conversion! Is it common for one cartoon to be harder than another?
Thanks for anyone's thoughts!

Deinterlacing is ALWAYS a good idea.
You can IVTC but sometimes lines will still show through.
You can IVTC and Double Deinterlace to eliminate the lines but it will become a little blurry.
Or you can IVTC, Double Deinterlace, and Sharpen Edge (H:80, V:80) and the results will be clear and free of horizontal llines.
This will slow down the encoding time but the result will be much more viewable on TV and on Computer. -
Thanks for your thoughts bbb, though I'm new to this & not familar with all the terminology.
Are these options in TMPGenc or VDub?
Is De-interlacing the same as not selecting the interlacing mode.
I use TMPGenc's wizard,so what a re IVTC etc? Can they be accessed via the VCD wizard? My aim is to make VCD's so I want them compliant with the template. -
The options are in Tmpgenc.
When making VCDs, after you IVTC and deinterlace, just push encode.
I don't use Wizard mode. Just as long as you select the template, you video will be compatible, even if you IVTC and double deinterlace and sharpen.
