  1. Just upgraded my video editing machine to Windows XP to overcome the 4G barrier on video files. Have now lost the ability to capture via the onboard firewire connection. Is there something obvious I am missing?
Was all happy under Windows 98SE but XP does not detect the camera. Asus P4PE 2GHz 512M DDR 40G + 45G HD
    Ulead Mediastudio Pro 6.5
    Sony Digital8

  3. XP has built-in support for a good number of cameras and camcorders, but you may need to check out Sony's site for drivers for yours.

If you upgraded from a scary version of Windows (9x), you may need to convert your hard drive from fat32 to ntfs. This is easy to do--- open a command prompt and enter 'convert c: /fs ntfs'. Answer 'yes' to all the stuff it will ask you and then reboot. Windows will convert the filesystem during bootup.

  4. Thanks for the quick reply. I have already converted the drives to NTFS but the macine is just not detecting the camera when I plug it in. I'll try looking at the sony site for a lead on a driver for the camera.

Why WinXP, have you thought about Win2000?

NTFS is available with OS Win2000 and is a much less of a problem than WinXP.

  6. Please don't confuse the issue. Windows 2000 was the best thing ever--- until XP came out. We all have our opinions on favorite operating systems, and I have great respect for Win2k. However, XP is a positive progression over Win2k... greater software and hardware compatibility, as stable or moreso, etc. The obscure security issues XP suffers are also suffered by Win2k, and there really is no compelling reason to stick with the old stuff anymore.

Rubbish, WinXP is worse just like WinME. You say compatibility, you must be joking. I have to revert my computer's OS from WinXP to Win2000 due to problems of compatibility and performance. WinXP is no good.

You mentioned security, I have a firewall and a anti-virus program in place. Security updates is available all the time from Microsoft for Win2000 and WinXP.

Microsoft is still selling Win2000 today. Updates is happening all time from Microsoft. It isn't old stuff and Win2000 is progressing, SP4 is coming soon.

I feel Win2000 is the best OS ever made and much better than WinXP.

You must respect individual choice of OS. You like WinXP, it is your choice.

    Pachyephalic:

Have you reloaded your Firewire drivers? I had the same problem when I upgraded and had to remove and then reloaded the drivers. I vaguely remember having to reinstall another driver also (maybe a Texas Instruments specific driver). It works fine now.

    For the WinXP bashers:

WinXP is a solid OS based on the Win2k core (not even close to Win98/ME). If WinXP didn't work well for you, it has something to with your hardware/drivers/configuration. If you like Win2k, then you should understand how WinXP could work so well for others. Also, if you look back a few years, you'll remember Win2k didn't run well on *some* machines/configurations too.

  9. Basically XP is the multimedia version of Win 2000. ME was a total bastard of a system (a bit like Win 95 OSR 1). I have recently started using XP, but also use 98SE as some proggies don't run on XP - one being BBMPEG, it starts and then crashes when you try to input a video file!

WinXP isn't perfect and not for everyone. The same goes for Win2000, however my computer is now almost error free and performance much better. The RAM was at 128MB as too low for WinXP. The machine's RAM is now up.

I can do just about anything without the worry of incompatibility. Sure some things wouldn't run well on Win2000 and fortunately for me, not experienced any problem like this yet. Except for the one thing, the TV card and have to download the Win2000 drivers and program for it.

I do find incompatibility as a serious problem with WinXP and far worse than Win2000. Now, I don't need to get a another printer as an example.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

WinXP has given me far less problems than 2000.
For overall compatibility (including older games) XP is far more compatible for me.
Win2000 wouldn't run any of my older games. Now I have a gr8 machine for multimedia and games.

    I'M HAPPY

    MERRY CHRISTMAS

Funny how a simple driver issue turns into another OS debate (and BTW, anyone who'd compare Windows XP Pro to ME is missing several chromosomes...)

It seems to me this was just something that typically happens when upgrading from 98 to XP (Xp drivers are closer to 2000 drivers than 9x).

  13. Did you look in:
control panel » System » hardware » device manager.

Did you see any yellow questions marks?

If so un-install that driver, re-boot and hopefully XP sees the
    firewire card this time.

I'm not gonna flame you but I"m gonna have to rebuke you.

Windows Me crashed 20, 30, 40 times everyday, had to reboot all the time.

Windows XP hardly ever needs to be rebooted.

What a rare breed, you must very lucky. I don't believe your story on compatibility on older games using WinXP. Are you sure using WinXP?

I experienced WinXP as a pain, not a gain. WinXP has far more problems generally than Win2000. Win2000 is also far more flexible in needs than WinXP as I can do things much more such as removing unwanted programs running. Microsoft introduced more restrictive practices using Win XP.

If you think WinXP is less of a problem then why are we having a lot of problems in the VCD forums associating with the OS WinXP? Incompatibility is a serious problem with this OS requiring for new drivers and programs and in some case no compatibility at all.

During September, my computer on WinXP got into very serious problems upgrading to WinXP SP1. The computer crashed at less twice and the system suffered irreversible damage.

The only way to repair was to re-format the hard drive; at this point I had enough and decided to revert to Win2000. The damage was due to conflicting anti-virus program with WinXP SP1. Microsoft claimed to fix the compatibility with the anti-virus program however this got me into a far worse scenario.

Win2000 to me as the best OS ever made is due to my personal experiences. WinMe and WinXP are both gone and I am having a trouble free vacation with computers. No more work, thank you.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

Nothing like taking a thread waaaaaaaaaaaaaay off topic! Just for the record I've run them all and Win2K and XP win hands down. WinME being the worse.
Now on to the original poster:
In my opinion upgrading from a prior version of Windows without doing a clean install is a sure fire way of running into problems. It usually results in what's been referred to as the half baked OS syndrome. To many old and incompatable drivers get carried over and result in what your seeing. My advice to you would be to backup your data, bite the bullet and go with a clean install. It might be a hassle but it will be well worth the effort.
    Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack

Clean install is the best way to upgrade your system and I agree with Kayfam.

I amazed this capture driver topic got into the debate of Win2000 vs WinXP. I only made a suggestion of trying Win2000 for NTFS and snarfo started the war. :P

I have enough of this debate and please be advise that I am only trying to help and not into a war.

Better to rename this as WIN2K Vs WINXP and move this to off-topic.

  20. I have to add my opinion on this one

Dos was best with Windows 3.1 on the side

Some of you may not even remember those.

I remember, WinXP doesn't support DOS either. I 'm not sure on Win2000.

I remember playing the "Future Shock", the terminator type game many years ago on Win98. This one DOS supported and the game now gone.

Windows 3.1 is way, way back to the good old days. I was using the old "Amiga" computer long before I got Windows. Must be around 12 years ago. I started from Windows 95.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU.

I would imagine XP to be a little more warmer and friendlier than 2000.

I'm not saying 2000 is bad.

XP was Microsoft's first real attempt to take a server based system (2000) and add the iditot proofing of Windows 9x.

I don't think they did a bad job, i mean I like the user friendliness of XP but at the same time, the underlying stuff (the NT core and NTFS support) are big for me.

As for compatibility, only a few old DOS games didn't work, and I didn't really try to use them.

It is time for everyone to switch off the debate of OS's. I have enough.

Favourite OS is personal for everyone, so no more please.

All I am saying that both Win2K and WinXP have NTFS. You chose Win2000 or WinXP for video capturing, video processing and video editing. It is up to everyone here at VCDHelp.

It doesn't matter which OS you are using as long everything works fine. If you are happy on what you are using in the computer is fine by me.

There is one thing I agree, WinMe was such a terrible OS. It is gone.

Just remember, we are here to ask for help or assist for problems.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

  26. Geez....all these MS-OS problems make me miss my Commodore 64 and old Atari!! hehe But seriously, the real problem usually isn't so much the OS as it is what hardware/software is supported under which OS. Fortunately both XP and Win2000 and pretty widely supported now.

  27. No success as yet but then I have been rather busy as well as ill. No problem with the firewire card as that is installed ok but the os does not detect the video camera at all. No success so far getting any different drivers from sony. The camera is an early edition of the Digital 8 format in PAL variant - a TRV110E.
Try to keep on the topic guys!

  28. Win XP and Win 2000 for that matter are not that great at supporting older hardware in general. This really means the makers of the hardware are not supporting it under newer OS'es. Your first step (which I think you are doing) is to check with the camera manufacturer (website). Frankly, I believe this is all a ploy to get folks to run out and buy new hardware! Did you happen to run the Win XP compatablity check prior to installing Win XP? This will look for both hardware and software that might have a problem under Win XP.

Yes, all too familiar with old devices with Win2000 and WinXP. Not so much with updated OS’s; it is also a problem with new updated hardware with the old devices used in the system.

I will now have to replace my old CD writer, the LITE-ON CD burner. This one doesn't work well with my upgraded Pentium 4 computer and as a result errors have occurred. It is too slow, at 4x speed to backup data and not designed with the updated computer technology. It has a used by date. Ok, for PIII and Win98 and WinMe and no good for today.

I should have updated my CD writer with all the other upgrades, the motherboard, processor, hard drive and a new OS.

It is hell getting the backup on disk done. I have to replace it as soon as possible this year.

Did you upgrade on top the old install? You might want to try backing up your files and do a "clean" install.

I upgraded a slightly older machine from Win98SE to WinXP Pro and the firewire works very well. Whereas, under Win98SE it worked sometimes and not others.
