im wondering how i can make a cd for my band, that has both audio (that will play on both the computer and a regular cd player) and a video track (that will ONLY play on the computer, as ive tried to make a cd with the same sort of thing before, and the regualar cd player recognizes the video as an audio track and plays it.)
so i guess what im asking is should i make it a vcd? well, the movie part anyways. and what would i need (program wise) to make the video invisible....
ive seen this dont before, i just need to know if it can be done cheaply and well (for what i pay for)
thanks!

Hi,
What you tell in your first part of the question can be done (Audio tracks for all and Video just for computers).
What you CAN'T do is make a combined Audio/VideoCD.
So the best way to go about is the following. Since most people use Nero i'll use this for the example. Start Nero and create an audio cd. Select the tracks you wanna burn en click on the burn icon. Now deselect the following : "Finalize CD" and "Disc-At-Once" en burn it.
Next when burning finishes start a "CD-ROM (ISO)" creation. Under the Multisession tab select "Continue Multisession disk". Now you can create a CD-Rom track on the remainder of the disc. So you can make some sort of autostarting menu that starts the video file(s).
Because of the fact that almost all regular audio cd player can't read multisession discs, the PC/Video track will be invisable.
Problem with this disc is, it won't play in stand-alone DVD-Player because it's not a VCD.

I think what you're after is an Enhanced CD, which is just a multisession CD with audio and data on it. There are a number of bands out there with such things already produced.
Mac actually used to be The Way to make these, using Apple Media Tool, but now AMT is dropping off the face of the planet, no longer distributed or supported by Apple.
Take a look at this and follow the links to the FAQ and the Apple doc, which should give you a start:

Guys, guys, guys ... Listen.
CD-DA audio is a part of the VideoCD spec, so of course it can be done (and even cheaply if you go partly "illegal".
The programs that can do it that I know of are VideoPack 4 and that Philips toolkit. I have made several VideoCDs with CD-DA audio and they're brilliant. You cannot do this with Nero. And when I made a CD-Extra (enhanced CD) disc with Nero, Nero gave me a warning that CD-Extra pushes the limits of the compact disc medium and should otherwise not be used! (I was shocked.) Also, the CD-Extra disc I finally made had the most annoying pops and clicks all over the music ... it was just a disheartening experience. That disc is currently collecting dust beneath my bed, actually.
To explain how to do this in VideoPack 4 is a lengthy process, but, again, it's totally do-able and on-spec. Your CD-DA audio tracks are stored in a CDDA folder on the VCD with the .DAT extension (the MPEG videos are of course stored in the MPEGAV folder with .DAT extensions). Some modern audio CD players will actually skip over your MPEG video track(s) and start playing the audio track(s); other modern CD players will play the MPEG track silently (no harsh noise). Older CD players (I'm talking pre-1992 or so) will attempt to play the video tracks as audio tracks and the noise will kill you and your dog.
Just keep in mind the CD-DA tracks take up 10megabytes a minute just like on-spec MPEG-1 for VCD tracks do. You'll still max out at 74/80 minutes per disc. You won't end up with a 10-hour MP3-like disc.
The Philips toolkit thing (I cant remember the proper name) is free now (theres a link for it somewhere in this site; it's a Windows 3.1 program that has not been updated for Win95/98; good luck finding a burning program that burns the images it makes). E-mail me for more details regarding VideoPack 4. -
I agree with Paul - if you want it to play in audio CD players and COMPUTERS you probably want an Enhanced CD and NOT a Video CD. If you want it to play in audio CD players and DVD PLAYERS then Video CD is probably the way to go.
While Video CDs can be played on the computer (I don't know about Enhanced CDs in a DVD player) most PCs don't come with a VCD player so people would be more likely to need to install some software to view the video - and that might turn away some potential fans.

Where does one find info on this Videopack 4? Is it Mac or PC? I checked on both versiontracker.com and windowstracker.com and could find no listing.

Documentation is nearly non-existent. Finding a working link is next to impossible. However, myself and a few others have it, use it and love it. Email me PRIVATELY for more details.
