  1. Hello,

I am converting a dvd quality .mpg to SVCD. The bitrate in the original file is 8 MBps.

Now I have read that a SVCD is 2520 kbps, am I really obliged to keep it that way. When I use the tmpg template (SVCD PAL), it automatically puts the bitrate to 2520.

Can I select a higher bitrate. Will nero give me a problem when I burn that as a VCD.

    Thanks,
    roh

  2. If you use a higher bitrate (if you load the TMPGenc unlock template after the SVCD template you can change it if it is locked) then you may get a warning - if the bitrate is too high it will be a XSVCD. Your player may not like it.

Experiment - if you have a player that will play it it should ave better quality. File size will baloon also so you may consider variable bit rate.

To be specific, the max video bitrate of svcd is 2600kbits. The max audio bitrate is 384kbits and the total max bitrate (audio + video) is 2748kbits.

Taking the audio bitrate into account, 2520kbits is a reasonable max video bitrate to use but this is just the recommended TMPGenc default, it is not representative of the actual max bitrate as defined in the svcd specs.

In fact, many dvd players won't even properly play video encoded above 2500kbits. If your willing to go outside of the svcd specs then you may consider raising your max bitrate. This will NOT affect filesize unless you are encoding in cbr or CQ modes but it will raise overall quality of very bitrate intensive scenes.

  4. I actually use 2496kbps video & 224kbps audio. This gives exactly 2720kbps which seems to be the standard for combined bitrates on most players with a PC DVD ROM drive.

  5. Thank you to all of you.

I will try to change (increase) the bitrate and see if my standalone can play it.

Also, thank to you, I know now how to 'unlock' the standard tmpg template after having loaded it initially.

    Thanks,
    Roh
