  1. Is there anyway of Ripping a DVD with having a DVD drive or a DVD Burner? This may be a stupid question but I just thought I'd give it a shot.

It can't be done because you need a DVD drive to read the dvd for decoding.

You can capture the output from a DVD player using a capture card but this is not ripping.

But to be equally flippant, with is the incorrect preposition when used with having so it is unclear as to what original the poster meant. :P

  10. You can run into macrovision problems when capturing a DVD via an analogue capture card, but not when ripping.

As Craig states, macrovision can indeed be a problem with analogue captures. It does however seem to be specific with particular players and/or capture cards.

I have captured macrovision protected sources with my PCTV capture card and never had a problem. I know that ATI capture cards can cause problems.

  12. if you just wanna have DVD backup....good dvd-roms are cheaper than good cap cards (16x dvd-rom lite-on for $37 shipped)

encoding from a capped source is never gonna be as good as encoding from the dvd source directly (digital vs. analog)
