Nero (5.5.8.0) only seems to allow me 1x as an option for burning DVD-R, without even examining the media used (genuine Pioneer 2x) . I thought that the maximum burn speed would be determined when the media was inserted and the drive examined it...... Any ideas?

With my DVR-A04 I can burn at 2x perfectly with both Apple, and Pioneer disk. Also I'm using the latest version of nero so I know it can do it... might want to try and upgrade.

Funniest thing, but I only get the 2x option on Singapour-made Pioneer disks. Japanese burn only at 1x

You might want to try the Media ID tool and verify you have Pioneer Media. You can't always trust the label. It it does not have the correct
MFG ID I would be on the phone to Pioneer. Maybe you can get some free media out of it.

IF you aren't using PIONEER brand media.... it (the burner) won't burn at 2x. Pioneer media has coding that will unlock 2x burning on thier burners. Its basically so you are forced to buy Pioneer brand media for 2x burning speeds. All other manufactuers of DVD-Rs do not have the PIONEER code to enable 2x. (Verbatim, Princo, abc, xyz etc etc) Thats why you are getting 1x even though you select 2x...the burners firmware is checking for the code.
Don't know about Apple discs haven't used their media..... but the poster above states they worked.... -
Actually many of the higher quality/higher priceed media have the 2x code, apple does aswell as many others. Check pioneers site and it has the list.

Let's hold on here a second.
I've seen a post source from pioneer regarding discs and i accept branded etc = 2X.
The problem is the option isn't available in the first place. If you are copying a DVD using the pioneer as the source, then the source media is in the drive when you set the burn speed.
What happens, you put a pioneer disc in at write time and suddenly nero pops up and says "you now have the option to burn at 2x"? -
Once again, NERO is only trying to protect you from you (whether this "Nanny code" is a benefit or not is the subject of another thread). If it detects media that can reliably burn at 2X, then the 2X speed is enabled - if not, then the 1X defaults. Put a 2X certified disk in your drive, and NERO will give you a 2X option.
For the record, I have a DVR-A04 and I use NERO (5580 or 5582 - same difference). I put a Pioneer DVD-R or a Verbatim 2X certified DVD-R in the machine and I have 2X burning capability. Works every time. And I mean EVERY time.
