With every encode you will get a drop in quality. The mpeg2 cannot create more quality than is in the original. If anything, you will see a drop in quality.

Ifyou were converting to mpeg1 and mpeg2 from another source, say a DVD or good quality DivX, then that would be a different matter. 8)

THe only difference you will notice is that you will have more blocks because you aer re encoding it, which will only degrade the quality

    With a short word, "N.O.!!!!!!!"

In short, you CAN NOT improve quality from a lower quality source.
Espcially if its a D/L'd file off the net. These files are unworthy or should
I say, unreliable. What I'm saying is that you don't know how many
times these movies have ben encoded, and re-encoded, and now you
    wanna re-encode it. LOL

    Morning tommydamic68,

oh, but maybe I can still help to some degree here. . .

ok, if its a divX file, and you want to in short, burn to a cd so you can
play/watch it on your tv (for these NET files, 13" but no higher) then
encode to VCD (352x240) After all, the movie is already in poor quality.
The reason why I say no higher, is because it will show more of the
macro blocks after you've re-encoded it.

But, there's nothing wrong with what you want to do here. Lots of people
D/L movies only to realize (or not) that they can burn it to a VCD on cd
and watch on their dvd players.

So, at the very least, you can be HAPPY that you can MAKE a VCD out of
these movies, and play on your dvd player.

Hope i've ben of some help here.

The title of this topic is "movie is mpeg1,WILL I SEE A DIFFERENCE IF I ENCODE TO MPEG2?"

It is not DivX, it is mpeg1. The short answer is "Yes". The longer answer is "It will be worse."

    banjazzer,

    my appoligies. . .

I saw the MPEG1 in your subject, but got carried away with the re-encoding bit, he, he...

Anyways, this does apply to MPEG1 files as well, assuming where talking
about VCD you're D/L'ing from the net. My above post still stands on
this one too. My gues is now realize that it's not very good quality (VCDs
from the net) and you want to re-encode to produce better quality.
Forget about it!! even if this movie, was for sure, w/out a doubt, a single
or first-time encode from a DVD source, you wont be able to improve
upon in quality because the source's resolution (assuming we're talking
about 352x240 for VCDs) has thrown away one of the fields during
the encoding of this (assumed) VCD you D/L'd from the net.
So, by stretching it to say 352x480 or 480x480 will only BLUR your newly
created encode (SVCD that is) making it even worse.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention, I've done all this, ben there, bla, bla, bla.
tommydamic68 and banjazzer and others, sooner or later, you grow tired
of D/L'ing unfaithful MPEG files, and want better quality. You'll prob end
up encoding your own to your satisfaction, unless you're already doing all
this in addition to your D/L'ing.

    Good luck in your crusade
