  1. Is all this talk about new DVDs that are unrippable true. I use SmartRipper and have no probs yet. If so what have you run into? Is there another program that is more reliable? If there is where is a how-to guide for it. Thanks!!

  2. un ripable cds i've heard of (a cd-rom drive can't even read it) but i haven't heard anything about dvds though they can't use he same technoligy used for cds as more than 50% of dvd players are in computers. and therefore would block a very large part of the consumers

  3. really, can't even read the audio CDs in the computer? i thought they just had another format (like .wma) instead of .wav file to play on the computer

as for unrippable DVDs, use dvddecryptor as a backup...it works really well when smartripper fails...

There is no such thing as unrippable. In order for any video medium to work it must be watchable, and if it is watchable it is rippable.

Just take those "unreadable" audio CD's for example. In order for you to hear the sound, the signal must be processed. Once the signal is read off the disk it can be intercepted and ripped. This holds true for any signal off any medium. The methods may not be easy but it is always possible.

Just look at the volume of traffic on this site about DVD ripping, the more complex the system gets the easier it is to find a weakness. Whatever technology comes after DVD I'm sure there will be twice as many ways to rip those.

    Cheers

  5. hell, you could TECHNICALLY just play the movie on the dvd player and record it with a digital video camcorder. Of course youd get horrible quality audio and sound, but nothing is "unrippable" ;) Same can be said for cds....

  6. There are some cd's that cant be read by a cdrom but will play in a cd player. I have just read an article on it, there is a link on this site to the article posted by adam. Apparantly on the outer edge of the cd there is a corrupted track which means that the cdrom will not play the disc. However there is an easy way round this by simply masking off the corrupted area using tape the cd will then play.

I've had the misfortune to come across one of these CDs. They do exactly what they say on the tin, my CD drive stopped responding and you could hear the laser keep trying to pick it up (like on a dirty CD).

I'd be interested to see if this masking trick works. Surely CD lasers are no more able to read the back of some electrical tape than they are a corrupted track.

Anyway... its all good fun isn't it.

Yes I think that the whole point is that with the electrical tape on the disc there is nothing for the laser to read, apart from the good tracks on the disc. Rather than reading a corrupted track which confuses the player.
