I have a lot of older subtitles that use apostrophes at the beginning and end of the text string that in a modern subtitle would be italics.

I really don't know how to use regex but I experimented with what I found online but could not get it to work reliably. The problem is I need it to ignore apostrophes in the text string like contractions and only see apostrophes at the beginning and end of a line and also work correctly when there is a line break in the text string and I cannot get it to do either and mine only works with the first string between apostrophes then moves on.

I'm using Subtitle Edit and the regular expression selection in the Replace function.

    Thanks for the help.

  2. In Subtitle Edit, go to "Edit > Multiple replace" and, after you've unzipped the attached template (replace-rules.template), import it, Apply, and then check the results to see if it's doing what I think you want to do. Regex is a nightmare to use for parsing HTML, but fortunately somebody came up with this script long ago and it's save my bacon many times.

Thanks so much. Sorry, I got busy and I just saw this. I will try it tomorrow if the day doesn't get away from me.
