Do i need a serial number to unlock cross fader so i can back up my music cds with tracks that run into each other.

not sure, but you might. your best bet is to use a serial number. if you lost it, or don't have one then get hold of the keygen file for the version of nero you have. You can get hold of keygen files from file sharing sites like www.winmx.com or www.grokster.com

Another quick question when i dowloaded this and run it i can now only burn to an image file. Even thought when i use nero speed it detects my writer and cd rom. I just do not understand wht i can not burn directly to my burner.

what brand is your dvd burner? Go to www.nero.com and see if nero fully supports your burner model.

It deffinately supports my burner (MITSUMI) as when i bought it it actually was bundled with Nero 5.5.0.1 this worked fine but when using this to burner for making tracks that run in to each other you need to use a function CALLED CROSS FADE that is missing in this version.
