  1. Can anyone please explain why some standalone DVD's have problems with SVCD ?

If I understand correctly SVCD and DVD are both mpeg-2 video, Mpeg-1 layer-2 sound. My DVD has problems with SVCD at any bitrate while it works fine for VCD at bitrates up to 2500 kbit/s so I don't think its a bit rate issue.
can the autoring program (nero) be the cause ?? Or the encoder (TMPGENC) ?

    Thanks,

Some stand-alones seem to have problems above a certain bitrate. Try this test:

Encode a SVCD using CQ setting:

    Max bitrate 1850
    Min bitrate 755
Quality 50 - 65 (you can go higher, but you probably won't notice much diference)

I find one of my DVD players will only play these, whilst anything with a higher bitrate falters. Even if I knock down the bitrate with 2-pass VBR, it still only plays the CQ encoded SVCDs properly!.
