Hey all, just signed up. I've been browsing this forum a long time; it has some great info and help. But I had an issue today I can't find and answer for so I thought I'd ask.

I tried copying some .MKV files to .MP4 with XMedia Recode. The video copied fine but the original audio was 224kbps and the copied output file was 96kbps. Anyone have any idea why such a big difference? The copied file size was the same as the original; but if I copy only the video and convert the audio to 224 the final file size is quite a bit bigger.

  2. Now that's scary! I've use it to make MKVs from my DVDs and BluRays and a couple of times to convert an MKV to MP4 and frankly I've never gone back to see what my audio output was after the conversion, yikes!

The reason I've never worried about the video and audio copy to the MP4 container because it happens in seconds. To test this, I just converted a small MKV from my library and it took a mere seven seconds to complete. The size of both is practically the same and MediaInfo shows it's the same files in a different container. It played perfectly on my soundbar, so I couldn't replicate your issue on my end; I'm using Windows 10 with mine and it did prompt me to update it this week, which I did to version 3.5.8.9 (64-bit).

Take note of the version of Xmedia Recode do you have installed, how long it takes it your MKV to output to MP4 and then compare the properties of both videos using MediaInfo.

  3. Have you got mediainfo software maybe open original file (mkv) with it and check the specs. Its been ages since I used xmediarecode but I think it sometimes detected audio specs wrong if vbr.

If the audio works in your player I would not worry about it. If you need to convert audio I would use fdk aac and set quality to 5.

  4. Awesome tip on the audio conversion specs, thermalzombie! (I was shooting for a zombie-looking emo on that last one for added props, lol) I love to hoard quick-but-good conversion tips like that for a rainy day!
