I'm currently editing a video that was previously encoded. There's some extensive editing that needs to be applied to certain segments. I hate doing this and know there will be generational loss. The deliverable also needs to be compressed. I usually just double the previous bitrate and render the video. This seems to not add many compression artifacts but is there a better rule of thumb here? What do you do in this situation? Should I triple or quadruple the previous bitrate?

I think the only thumb rule i know of is to keep the original file beeing edited in an real nice encoded format with crazy high bitrate and then encode this video into an compressed format with an more balanced bitrate suited for the needs! 768 bitrate for an mp4 seem to be really low, but still real nice quality but chances are there could appear an pixel or to, allmost never anything! to stay safe i guess it is easy to understand to just bump it up above 1k.. maybe 1400-1600 bitrate for an hq mp4!
Edit: Since some formats with an more of the editing type of encoding allso tend to take up alot of storage they seem to enyoy an trip into an Zip or Rar package with great compression results, atleast if you would want to keep the original file! If thats not the way you would want to go maybe you could try around 1000 bitrate for an balanced quality!Last edited by Swedaniel; 10th Dec 2023 at 18:03.

Are you allowed to use CRF bit rate control instead a 2-pass VBR?
If so set it CRF 1 and try that
