I am getting ready to replce the old PII-450 that I use for editing now with something much better, it is about time. Here is what I am getting:
CPU - P4 2.26b (512 L2 cache, 533mhz front bus)
Mother - Asus P4T533-C
Memory - Samsung PC-1066 RDram, 512mg worth
Hard Drive- (2) Western Digital 100gig, with the 8meg ram
Video - Asus V8460Ultra / Deluxe GeForce 4 card
Haven't decided on the sound card yet, any ideas?
More important I just can't make up my mind on the DVD -RW or +RW, seems like a crap shoot.
Will be using Ulead Media Studio 6.5

Please make sure that you will choose wisely between DVD-R or DVD+R.
One of them probably will become the standard in the future, and I suppose that you do not want to end up with a feature which is not supported in the future.
At the moment DVD-R seems to be less expensive. But on the other hand DVD+R seems to be more compatible.
I have read that the next generation of windows will support an internal burning program for DVD+R. This could push this to be standarized.
The problem is that not the best feature will always become standard, but the one with the best marketing.
(Once we had for video Betamax and VHS. VHS became standard although Betamax was better)

Well I have always been leaning toward the +RW format because it is the newest tech, and like you said seems to be getting the big $ backers behind it. But then I read alot of the -RW fan really cutting it down, but are they just trying to support what they already own. In the end I think it will be a +r/+rw drive, I am going to wait untill May 26th because Intel is cutting prices then. So their is a little time yet to see how things shake out, 2 weeks is a life time as fast as this stuff changes now days.

Woah there.
The DVD+ formats are not more compatible than the DVD- formats. And, they do not have the "big $" backers behind them.
The DVD-R format is the ONLY format endorsed by DVD Forum... you know, the guys who own the rights to DVD logo and technology.
That's right, DVD-RW is not included and DVD+* is specifically excluded.
Whats more.. the DVD-Forum only endorses 1x DVD-R at the moment. So 2x DVD-R is a hack that usually works but is not officially endorsed.
That said, I obviously would go w/ DVD-R, especially since Apple has the mass market share w/ that technology already. PCs are late in the game, and usual, PC-makers think they know better than anyone else and that's why we have DVD+*
On the other hand, it probably won't matter. The DVD-Forum, Apple, et al are not going to leave their users hanging, and neither will the PC folks, so just pick one. In the future, set top players will likely play both DVD+ and DVD- just fine.
If you are worried about compatibility TODAY, nothing beats 1x DVD-R by an Apple superdrive (= Pioneer A03/A04 on a PC). -
Oh.. and let me recommend VegasVideo 3.0a to you.
I don't have any reason to gain for recommending it, but I used to use Ulead MediaStudio Pro 6.5, and now use Vegas and I love it!
Vegas stomps all over MSP6.5... and premiere6 for that matter.
The interface is a little different, but it's better. MSP ripped their godawful interface from Premiere. Sonic Foundry went back and thought about what the interface should be and built it that way.
Try it, you'll like it. -
