    Hi All,

I want to mention that I've done a number of searches on the site to make sure I wasn't asking the same questions people had asked before. That being said, I apologize if I'm double-asking.

I am upgrading to a new computer that should be able to handle HD editing. I have two systems I'm looking at. I'm not fully pro and not rich, but I think these should do the job:

Gateway - 1.8Ghz, Quad Core, 4G RAM, integrated 512mb video card (I will upgrade to dedicated card)
Acer - 2.4Ghz, Dual Core, 4G RAM, integrated 128mb video card (I will upgrade to dedicated card)

I believe that each of these machines, with new cards, will be able to handle HD. But I'm confused by the lower Ghz Quad and the higher Ghz Dual. Which one would actually be faster? I've gotten conflicting answers to that question.

Thanks for reading and for any guidance.

    -Mike H.

  2. 1.8 quad core means 4 cores each of speed 1.8, 2.4 dual means 2 cores each of speed 2.4; you do the math... in general i'd get anything as long as it's pentium, not amd

I think many on this forum would disagree with the pentium (Intel) vice AMD processors.

I wouldn't go with anything less than a BladeCenter QS22/LS21
    129600 or Cray XT5.

    cL0N31,

Actually, isn't it right Quad Core means one core with four partitions? That's how it has been explained to me and the point is supposed to be that partitioning the core makes it more efficient and therefore faster. However, whatever that faster speed is doesn't necessarily mean it's faster than a dual 2.4Ghz.

    Thanks!

this forum, that forum... in reality, both processors are on the market, which means people buy both... why i think intel is better? because of the recent benchmarks i did myself... also because intel's cpus are more expensive for a reason... and also because i, myself run phenom 9600 quad-core, which as i realized later after purchase is flawed

let me open you a secret: people at places like bestbuy don't know shit... even if i ever happen to find myself in such weird place (and i probably won't), i'd never bother asking people there about 'how stuff works'

    Supreme2k: won't cray cx1 do?
