I saw there was a very old thread (last post 2008).

I am building a new system. I am taking the parts to Microcenter today to begin assembly.

I would like to run KVM (hopefully Ubuntu as kind of know that) as a bare metal hypervisor and all other functions to be performed using virtual machines (VMs). Failing using KVM, I would use VMWare/VMPlayer. I would dedicate the network connections to the VMs. When I need to perform updates to the hypervisor, I would close down all VMs and connect to the internet just for the update before terminating the connection restarting the VMs and reconnecting the network connections to the VMs.

If possible, I would like the my TV-tuner and an AV capture card running off a VM. The TV-tuner I have is by Hauppauge and they say it will not work on a VM. This is a little bad, but as it does not require a network connection, not horrible for having to run on the bare metal machine.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement TV tuner card that can run a VM (Windows (preferably 10) or Linux)?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a AV capture card that can run on a VM (Windows (preferably 10) or Linux)? I really want this on a VM as I would be capturing off the internet. I refuse to pay extra for no commercials on a streaming service when I already have to pay for the service. I would rather cancel having the service.

Finally if anyone is running the cards on VMs could you give pointers.

I only have limited experience with virtual machines. However, when I was fooling around with them a few years ago, it quickly became obvious that support for niche components like TV tuner cards and capture cards was non-existent. There is no reason to think that has changed.

If you are capturing video from the Internet, you would be recording streams or downloading files. You don't need a capture device for that. You need software.
