  2. The hard part is conceiving what you want it to look like. After that it's just mechanics.

    ^ This

Decide on what you want it to look like , then you can get more targeted help

What is the general concept and appearance? Is it cartoony? Flying saucer? Some blip ? Is it composited into real video ? Do you have the underlying video ?

Do you need realistic , or interacting with objects ? You might to also use 3D software to make and animate the UFO, then bring into AE

Yeah, what would be real cool would be to shoot a scene in, for example, an empty-ish field.
Then use a spherical camera in a similar position to the standard cam recording, to create a 3D environment map, hopefully immediately after, so it has the same time of day look.
Then, use a 3D compositing/rendering/animation app (e.g. Blender) to create a 3D model of a "UFO", possibly with a little "shiny metallic reflection" on it. Make sure the scene is actually accurately scaled like the real world.
Then, apply the environment map to the environment and do a render with a virtual camera in basically the same equivalent position as the original traditional camera was in the real world. Make sure you render the object itself separately, and do a separate "reflection pass" and "shadow pass" which you can then tweak if you composite in AfterEffects.
Then you could layer the 3D object on top of the original scene footage and it should be (near) EXACT, right down to the reflections and shadows.
Not quick to do, or workable for newbies, but would be pretty cool!
