  1. I was looking for a Mpeg-1/2 capture device and have seen mixed reviews. Capture looks good, but I hear about a/v sync problems. I was looking to transfer my Hi8 and VHS tapes to my PC, and was wondering if anybody had experience with this product. Does it come with XP drivers? Are they VFW drivers so 3rd party software can be used? (will VirtualDub solve a/v problems?) Does the a/v sync problem have to do with the sound card? This looks like the perfect device for me, if it works!!

  3. My friend and coworker has the same problem with this device. He gets great quality on a 2 hr movie, but at the last 30 to 40min the audio goes out of synch. He tried a lot of different things like not going to the device for sound, but right to the sound card. He also defragged and used a faster hard drive (scsi). He also is using different authoring programs such as ulead and dvdit. He still has the problem even though the raw files appear to be perfect. Do you think it is the Codec issue? CAn someone help, PLEASE?

Mine goes out of sync at the 45 minute mark. Probably okay to cap from Showtime (satellite) as that channel's programs are shown uncut with no commercials, so they come out to 45 minutes. Running into sync problem when capping movies since they are over the 45 minute mark and go out of sync at that point. Any ideas how to correct the video and audio in that portion that is out of sync? Also, it may be better to cap in the DVD quality mode or a custom mode (704X480 5MBps) than using the built-in SVCD template. I notice motion artifacts in the SVCD video I capped. Will try again with the custom mode.

  5. Well, as long is it is in synch for 40 minutes, I can stop it, start it, and edit it together in Premiere. How is the sound quality? Is the sound/audio quality good enough for a high quality VHS or VCD? Any experience with output to these formats using this device? What about Hi8 experience? Are there any patches or 3rd party software (VDUB?) that fix the 40 min. problem?

    Thanks

There is a solution but you have to check the forum at pub9.ezboard.com. It's a bit drawn out but it consists of demuxing the audio and video and matching the 2 streams then remuxing them. I'd say the software for this device is 6 months too early yet as there are numerous issues to resolve, the out of sync audio/video being just one of them. I haven't tried my hi8 caps yet. Still trying to deal with issues in VHS/Beta.

You have to watch the editing software. Apparently, most of them will screw up the sync when they save the cut file. MyFlix apparently won't do that. There is a good piece on editing with Visual Studio 5.0 on the opening page...

    Latest addendum:

Tried the IDVD tonight with Laser Discs as the source.

DVD spec 3Mb/s 48kHz stereo: Unwatchable. Like an old Mpeg-1 VCD!

DVD spec 4Mb/s 48kHz stereo: Great picture. Probably like good cable TV.

DVD spec 5Mb/s 48kHz stereo: Couldn't play back on computer. Jerky.

Also couldn't get Video Studio 5 to re-render in Mpeg-1 VCD. "Make Movie" template was greyed out...My Apex AD-600 can't play SVCD or mini-DVDs so VCD is my only other option (until I get another DVD player).

Audio and video were in sync from the LDs. So far, it seems like video tapes are hit and miss. Will be trying 8mm/Hi-8 in the next few days. Results will be posted here.

I loaded up the new CapWiz 1.5 in place of the 1.4.x version that I had and tried caps at 4Mbs 704x480 48kHz and used 10 year old SVHS and Beta tapes and they capped in perfect sync sound! Now if I could solve the problem with the bottleneck in my system that prevents me from capping in 5Mbs and the picture shift to the right problem, then i think I'll be keeping the IDVD a bit longer...
