    I have a Sony Hi8 tape.

I would like to convert this to digital on my computer. Is there any cheap equipment I can get?

    Thanks.

If a single tape, go to a dub house and pay the $20-$40 bux. Equipment will cost more and get lower quality.

What is the end goal? For quality, ask for a DV-AVI format file. That can be edited or filtered easily. If all you want is a DVD copy, they can do that.

I have one tape only for now.

But for the future, I might capture more videos on my old Sony camcorder that use the Hi8 tape.

I want get high quality video from Hi8 tape and edit it on Adobe Premiere. Thanks.

You can get something like the Canopus ADVC-110 or DataVideo DAC-200

Both do the same thing ... take analog video and audio and convert to DV-AVI format.

    P.S.
Please note that slightly older versions exist that you might be able to find cheaper on eBay etc.
The old Canopus is the ADVC-100 and the old Datavideo is the DAC-100
The older units don't appear to be any less capable than the newer units so if you can find them cheaper ... so be it!

I was looking at the DataVideo DAC-200.

I have to have player such as VCR/DVD player, go through DataVideo DAC-200, then out to PC.

I am looking for a equipment that will go straight to PC without having to go through a player.

I don't have VCR/DVD players. Only a PC with monitor. This acts as my TV.

You want to convert a Hi8 video tape so you need something to play it back on and you need something to convert it to DV AVI format. So you need a "player" such as a Hi8 camcorder and you need a converter such as the DataVideo DAC-200 etc.

There is another solution ... Sony made some Digital8 camcorders which had a feature where they would play back a Hi8 video tape and internally encode to DV AVI in real time thus outputing a DV AVI signal via FireWire. In this way it was possible to hook the camcorder up directly to the computer without the need of a unit like the DataVideo DAC-200.

Please note not all Digital8 camcorders can do this and they aren't even made anymore so ...

I like the standalone Pyro A/V Link from ADS, which I've used for years. This is harware- ( firmware-) based solution and can be advantageous if you've got a slow PC or if you're multitasking.

It's small enough to be portable, and you can use it for DV'ing just about any analog format: LaserDisc, component video, S-video. It's audio and video perfromance is very good.

You're best off outsourcing it to a service.

We expanded to do 8mm tape, Hi8 tape and DV a while back, because there's demand for the work, and people were unable to do these themselves. ........ (Yes, DV. It seems most folks are able to use a dual-deck VCR/DVD combo to convert tapes -- lackluster quality VHS>DVD, I can assure you -- but having a camera that functions AND the ability to properly hook up wires, on a non-VHS format, seems to escape them.)

This device does more or less the same thing as the aforementioned Canopus and Datavideo units. As I understand it the unit is cheaper and supposedly works well but it does lack selectable IRE BLACK for the input. As I recall it is set to 0.0 IRE BLACK but most NTSC video sources are 7.5 IRE BLACK.

The Canopus and DataVideo have an option to select 0.0 IRE BLACK or 7.5 IRE BLACK for the inpout. Very handy indeed for NTSC people (except perhaps Japan which is the only NTSC that is 0.0 IRE BLACK)
