  3. I had the same thing the other day. A silvery cdrw (Maxell) worked in my player but the same image on a dark blue/green Fuji cdr would not. I burnt the image on to a light yellowy/green Memorex cdr and it worked fine.

Thank you for your suggestion with regards to your URL.

But I can not see anywhere in the URL you gave me that answer the question that I started in this Forum.

Well.... I have just had another go, using a high quality disk, and slowing the speed down to 4 speed.

The CDR's will still not work.... (used 5 CDR's now) all CDRW disks have worked well.

I am using NERO 5 + with a new aopen 24x10x40, and playing the VCD on a home Sony DVPS336 (Multi-zoned)

Does anyone have any ideas ??? PLEASE :x

Thank you drewid for the reply.

I think I have tried 3 different brands of CDR's, all go the same way.

Maybe you are right, could be the Sony DVD Player itself.

But I still cannot understand why the CDRW work and the CDR's do not.

  9. I came across this a while back. It has something to do with the wavelength of the laser used in DVD players. RW media is burned by a laser that has a wavelength closer to what is found in DVD players. R media isn't, so some DVD players have problems reading it.

  10. I have the same results. On my Sampo, CDR and CDRW VCDs play equally well. However, on my Sony which is a 5 disc player and 3 years old, only the CDRW's work for VCDs. I have used several brands of CDRW on the Sony, including CompUSA, Yamaha and TDK. CDRs that I have tried on the sony include, Memorez, TDK, Maxell and Verbatim. All to no avail. With the price of CDRW's coming down, such as the TDK's I purchased for 19 dollars for 25 pcs.

  13. What I've been wondering is when it comes to CD-R's, why will some brands work and others not? I don't have that problem myself, my Apex plays everything so I get whatever brandname is on sale (almost every week someone has a 50-pack for $5 after rebate!). But I've seen other players are picky about brands and I'm wondering why. I mean I assume there is some 'standard spec' that all CD-R media should meet... maybe that's a wrong assumption on my part?

Looking at the CDRW disk their color is black/blue, and most cdr are a green/silver color.

I think the answer is to buy black/blue color CDR disks and they may work.

I will try this out over the next few days, I would like to thank you all for your help.... Gary

Some DVD players do will simply not read CDR due to the lower reflectivity of CDR vs CDROM. However, you can increase your odds by using higher reflectivity discs. Your best bet is to use 74minute, cyanine dye, silver reflective layer discs.

    http://www.yamaha.ca/computer/support/faq/g101.html#q6
"...cyanine or Azo based dye. Such media, because of their great level of reflectivity offered by its silver reflective layer, usually offer increase compatibility..."

"A major advantage of Cyanine based discs is that they work with a wider range of laser powers

  17. I have a ge 1400p (i think that is the number) dvd player. I can play cdr media for mp3 and music cds (even though the manual says I shouldn't be able to); however, I recently made my first vcd and it would not read the disc. The media i used for the vcd is one that i have not tried before with either music or mp3. Is that most likely because of the media or because of the vcd format. I will try the vcd with the cdrs that have worked in a few days--till then, can anyone cure my curiosity?

  18. When someone posts a link (e.g., to the DVD FAQ) I would strongly suggest that you actually spend time and read through it. The DVD FAQ contains the answer to this post. If you are bothered enough to post a question on the forum, please take the effort to actually read the answer.

The reason why is simple and has been posted on the forums literally hundreds of times.

Your DVD player most probably wasn't designed for CD-R or CD-RW media and not surprising doesn't read then well or at all (e.g., similar to first generation DVD-ROM drives).

In these drives, it just so happens that the optics of a CD-RW disc is somewhat more compatible than CD-R discs. That's it. That is why CD-RW are more likely to work than CD-R discs in these drives.

All the other hypotheses that some discs are more reflective than others or some dyes are better than others may have grains of truth but are really just conjecture. From experiences posted on the forums over the years, no single CD-R brand or colour seems more likely to work than any other over the spectrum of DVD drives that are not designed to read CD-R/W.

    Regards.
