  1. I'm downloading a lot of large 1080p video, which is available in both H.264 and H.265, and I'm trying to decide which format to use. The obvious advantage of 265 is that the files will be smaller. However, my purpose is for long-term archiving, and thus being able to play these videos many years later. For this purpose, do you think 264 or 265 is better? Most video content out there, including blu-rays, are all 264-based and so will be supported for ages to come. 265 is somewhat newer and has patent issues, so my concern is whether 10 or so years later these files will be supported by various home streaming players.

    Honestly, it makes no difference, storage is cheap, use whatever format looks good to you and is easy for you to use.
