  1. So I have a really old (about 35 years old) VHS tape of two high school plays my dad was in, and it's in really bad condition, so I'm trying to see if I can get it cleaned up and restored. The two plays are on the same tape, but they're both in different conditions. The first one was originally filmed in color, but it only plays in black and white, and it's full of lots of static and skipping. Here's a short sample: https://youtu.be/SBhxJZkYYCk

However, there is a brief split-second at one point where the color comes back: https://youtu.be/PWVQIOLDLSY

The second play is still in color, but there's still a lot of static and skipping. Here's a sample of that: https://youtu.be/LMBYVLbIKKI

It seems like this might be a tracking issue, but I tried it in two different VCRs and got the same result, and pressing the tracking buttons doesn't seem to do anything. Also, the tape itself doesn't seem to be physically damaged just by looking at it from the outside, but I'm the farthest thing from an expert on the subject, so I don't know. I'm trying to research professional services that might be able to restore the tape and get it digitized, but I wanted to make a post here first to get some feedback. Judging by the clips I posted, does it seem like the tape can be restored? I'm especially unsure about the black and white one, because I'm not sure how much could be done to restore the color, or if that's even possible. If so, can anyone recommend any services I should try?

I noticed the audio seems to jump in speed which may be due to a stiff tape transport. Is the tape easy to turn if you put a pencil in the locking hole and then try to turn one of the reels in the right direction? Transferring the tape reels into a new shell might help.

  3. I just put the tape into a new shell like you said, and the playback quality is still the same as before. At this point, it looks like I'm just going to go with a restoration service. Any suggestions?

Lack of TBCs, tracking issues from likely misalignment.

If the color data is gone, it was never there, bad recording.

The audio "jumping" is just lack of TBC causing dropped video frames.
