You have to make sure that in the VFW decoder tab of the ffdshow config that it is set to libavcodec for DivX 3 and not disabled.

How do I do that? It would be particularly helpful if you told me how to get tó that whole "VFW decoder tab of the ffdshow config" thingee.... Thanks!

It's not clear what you're trying to do
If you just want to watch a video, install VLC or mpc-hc

This old thread refers to loading the video in VirtualDub to edit it.

To watch it in a media player, you either use a media player which includes all necessary decoders (like those mentioned above) or install a DirectShow decoder filter for the mentioned video format, like LAV Filters, for any general DirectShow supporting media player.
