  1. ok, i've been ripping dvd's for a LONG time, so it's hard for me to change what i do.i've always ripped in this order:

    SmartRipper -> DVD2AVI -> TMPGEnc

    i'm pretty sure i can't get subtitles this way, and i've never needed to, but now with some things i'm getting into, i need the subtitles. what would anyone else suggest for usage of subtitles AND good quality?

    EDIT: in looking everything over, i think DVD2AVI is the reason the subtitles can't be done in my method. am i correct?

    You just need to add one step to your process.

    SMartripper ==>DVD2AVI==>Virtual dub==>TMPGEnc

    Please note:
    As virtual Dub cannot read the file created by DVD2AVI, you'll have to convert this file. The program is called: VFAPi conv. you can find it on the download section of this side.

    In Virtual Dub you'll have to add the Vobsub filter.

    The exact steps are:
    1 Smartripper
    2 DVD2AVi
    3 VFAPIconv
    4 Virtual dub with the Vobsub filter. Then FRAMESERVE to
    5 TMPGEnc

    The quality if subs is very good.

    If you are creating SVCD, then i might be a good idea to check the possibilities of DVD2SVCD
