  1. I came accross a tutorial that said you must use the default bitrate of 1050 when encoding a VCD mpeg. Is this true or can you use any, and variable bitrates when making a VCD mpeg?

    Thanks

  2. MPEG-1 is not limited to 1050, that's the just the VCD standard. You are free to use use up to 2500 or more, but that depends on what your player will handle.

See X(S)VCD on the left menu under WHAT IS.

Often I download a stream that falls well outside the VCD standard. I can create a non-standard VCD compliant stream by pumping up the bitrate to 2000, and raising the resolution to 720x480. This will take care of all those "high-quality" DivX streams that are better than VCD but not good enough for SVCD.

yes and no, boopat. there are spec(ification)s which spell out, in detail, what a VCD's audio/video settings should be. using those settings will provide the most compatibility across players, hardware and software.

here at the forum, though, we like to "push the envelope" a bit, and come up with VCD variations, completely out of specs and non-compliant, which will allow for increased quality and/or more movie on a disc, depending on a particular need, or just on how we happen to be feeling at the time we decided to click on "Encode"/"Start".

as suggested, when you have the time, take a closer look at some of the links on the left for lots more info.
