    Hello!
    I'm a real newbie in video editing and as a native German not familiar with typically used terms ...
    I like to cut out the center area of a video in order to get rid of an outer black frame.
    I there a tool (freeware) that offers this feature?

    "Crop", nicht schnitt.

    Many tools will do this. I suggest you use a standard NLE (non-linear editor) GUI app, as when doing cropping, you will end up HAVING to re-encode anyway, and it makes more sense to have the ease-of-use in a gui app.
