  1. I've tried to rip this dvd and convert to vcd. My problem is the result video is flashing. I don't know why, because all of previous dvds i ripped before worked fine. The video seems jump, tremble and flash since around 4 min until the end.
Does anybody know what is happening?
    Thanks in advance.

  2. Can't help you sorry.. but I'm very curious ---

why are you trying to do this?

I bought this DVD, and Disney nearly GAVE it to me. I believe I payed $19.99 for it -- I got a nice double-DVD case w/ very high quality artwork, a flowchart inside that helps me find my way around the interactive elements, and two perfect quality pressed DVDs that I don't have to worry about exposing to UV light.

OH... and they threw in Fantasia 2000 (my choice) for FREE for my trouble of walking into the store and buying it.

Why you would want to take this and put it on horrendous quality VCD, throwing away all the restoration work and abundant interactive elements is incomprehensible to me.

I realize maybe you don't own it and you are trying to get a free copy... but I've tried that just to see if I could do it (with movies that I actually own, even) and it seems to be a lot more work than it's worth. I don't know how much you value your time, but even at a lowly $20/hr, your time would be better spent doing ANYTHING else.

I'm not trying to flame you, I'm just trying to understand your motivation..

  3. 2 words = free movie...besides its not like you cant do anything else while your movie is being ripped or encoded

  4. I guess I make the mistake of thinking that those who own DVD players own them because of the enhanced quality of playback.

I admit it.. I'm a quality freak. That probably gets in my way of understanding the whole VCD thing.

I tried to make VCDs, even downloaded some pre-made samples, and the quality was far below my acceptable minimum.

  5. Malcom, SVCDs=true menu's and chapters, subs, upto 2 audio streams

higher resolution and bitrate than standard VCD and uses VBR rather than CBR, also SVCD is mpeg-2 same as DVD with some differences i'm not sure of

as for the original question, AngusMacGyver, try reversing the field order...that may help

  7. how does this board spark the interest of someone spewing garbage about the futility & worthlessness of vcd/svcd creation? why are you still reading it if you've made up your mind well & good? did the mpaa send you to try & dissuade people. look, i'm sold on dvd. i collect them....my 264 capacity caselogic binder is getting close to full. is my mindset somehow incompatible with copying them?

  8. Nah, I just think this is more of a hobby than a worthwhile practice, and I was wondering if anyone would admit it.

I read the forum to pick up knowledge re: MPEG, sound, video editing, DVD authoring, etc. Occasionally I wonder stuff like this. Sorry if it touches a nerve.

  11. Snow White purchase - $19.95

    or

Snow White Rental at Blockbuster (considering a get a free rental with every rental) - $1.99

    Blank Disc - $0.20

Empty DVD Jewel Case - $0.40

CD Label with Snow White Printed on it - $0.10

DVD Cover printed from online source - $0.13

    Total - $2.82

Savings of $17.13, or more importantly...

One DVD or 7 VCDs? I'll take the 7 VCDs anyday. Another reason why...

Actually this is funny, because I bought the Snow White DVD when it first came out. I had just bought my DVD player and was itching to watch DVDs... and I could get Little Mermaid for free, which is my fiancee's favorite movie.

Number of times I've watched Snow White in the 6 months since I've bought it - 0.

Yep, I've never even watched the movie. I've never watched most of the VCDs I have. Why do I have them? I like knowing they're there when I feel like watching a movie. A fun hobby that makes my life easier when I want it to be easy. Plus a sense of accomplishment having the movies there.

If it's a movie I know I"m going to watch over and over (ie Mummy Returns), I buy the DVD. If I'm probably going to watch it three or four times in my entire life, VCD all the way baby!

  12. even at a lowly $20/hr
Maybe that's another problem with your argument Malcolm. If $20/hour were lowly, perhaps I'd consider buying more DVDs. But when the average college kid makes $5.15 an hour working a minimum wage job, $20/hour doesn't sound so lowly. I'm out of college now making way more than I did in college... but with loans, rents, bills, and everything else... DVDs just don't hold the value of $20.

  13. The Snow white DVD has a problem with some dvd drives and doesn't play right, but there's a patch for it on windows update. That might help in ripping the dvd better.

  14. Or even easier, instead of ripping DVDs... just capture them! So much easier than worrying about ripping it not working.

You all have valid points. Malcolm, on this one, I couldn't agree with you more. I bought it for my daughter, got the free Fantasia 2000, and on top of that, stores were giving another free gift too. I got a free plush toy from Toys R Us. I do agree with other comments on this posting, though. If it's a movie I don't watch much, I rip it for prosperity. I like the fun of doing it, and maybe sometime, I might watch it again. A CD takes up very little space!! If I love the movie, it's dvd all the way!! One thing that does piss me off, though. Everytime, you think you have the definitive copy of a film, the studios put out another version, and for this alone, I like to stick it to them and rip the things. It is totally unfair to those who spend their hard earned money on dvds. Don't keep adding more things and re-releasing the same films.

capping is never gonna be as good as encoding from the vobs directly (digital)
